Props to them for not using invincibility cheats or prerecorded gameplay.
Not a very good presentation. As I can tell from seeing this footage you can either play aggressivly or stealthy to achieve your goal. Wasn't Thief always being about sneaking and avoiding direct confrontation at any costs?
I hope you can turn off those tooltips, things like and enemy's "alert" status how it showed that he was suspicious after the player shot a water arrow at the streetlight. Or item notifications, picking up/dragging body notifications, etc etc.

I'm really digging that full body awareness though.

Unless the guy was just awful, he died against 3-4 guards so hopefully it won't be as easy to just run in guns-a-blazin'.
I hope they don't put us in situations where "Focus" is necessary. One of the best parts of the previous Thief games was relying on your skill and reactions to deal with threats as opposed to "hurr press to freeze time and take out a group of guys in three seconds"
I want enemies to be actual threats instead of minor obstacles that can be easily hurdled.
That being said the game looks pretty good so far.
tactic00l slow-mo arrows
looks gimmicky and made for a wide audience, but at least the stealth is still there. Looking good for now.
Oh hello dishonored, didn't expect to meet you here, this is the thief gameplay showing so I'm not sure why you're here.
Nyeh. I like the design of the blackjack at least

Restricting a game to STEALTH ONLY OR YOU FAIL can really detract. I imagine they'll make it almost impossible to do anything and do it right by being aggressive, but I'd be sorely dissapointed if they said "lol gameover screen when caught"
More gameplay, this one seems to be more stealthy than the last one:

That's a really good point a lot of people don't think of. Warren Spector didn't really think that it was fun to force a player to conform to ONE playstyle, and thought it was frustrating to people who didn't normally like those types of games. He changed that when he worked on Deus Ex. You can play stealthy, or not. Your choice.

He didn't imply thats how it should be. Perhaps when you're seen, you're rushed by the guards who are so powerful you simply can't win? Or maybe each individual guard is strong as shit, and if you get seen by one you have the chance to kill him before he alerts the others? Its retarded to go into a stealth game and go "fuck, i hate that i have to play stealth in this stealth game"
this does look way better than I was expecting it to look, though. Expected a lot more cowadoody/dishonored/assassins creed elements tbh. It looks kinda neat, and its nice to see stealth in a triple A title again.

People play games, people can make mistakes. Having to reload every time you get spotted is bad game design. Having more powerful guards is a very artificial way to increase difficulty, too.

Games should really try to avoid having players save scum. I mean, think about it like this. Let's say you're trying to pull off a tricky shot with an arrow, and you just quicksaved. How is using a limited resource focus to aim more accurately any different from shooting, reloading the save, shooting, reloading save, shooting, reloading save, until you pull off the shot?

They said it's optional and you can turn focus and other "powers" off.
I love games but i hate gamers.
Funny. It's that whole whining attitude i despise.

Not to mention if memory serves right in the first Thief game if you got caught you was very possible to fight your way through, it'd be hard and you'd be doing the opposite of what the game would like you to do, but it was very possible
I dig this game more. The other thief games were boring as fuck because of that whole no confrontation thing, it was basically walking point a to point b, shooting water arrows at candles now and then.
Not to mention if memory serves right in the first Thief game if you got caught you was very possible to fight your way through, it'd be hard and you'd be doing the opposite of what the game would like you to do, but it was very possible
Not only was it possible, but it was mandatory if you got caught. In Thief 1 and maybe 2, there wasn't any "OH SHIT I GUESS HE GOT AWAY LET ME GET BACK TO MY POST" mentality with the guards. They saw you, you had to kill them.

Which kinda bugged me, I wish you could just knock them senseless, but I suppose realistically if you beat someone about the head enough times to render them unconscious in a fight you most likely killed him anyway :v:

That was possible. It would just take ridiculous amount of hits to knock someone unconscious if they were alerted.
To be honest i kind of preferred how it was before, but from what they said a bunch of stuff is totally optional and hopefully not needed. I enjoy playing the thief games for a stealth experience not for assassination simulation. That said i am interested in where this is going and hoping it actually turns out to be thief 4 instead of dishonored 2

I dunno about previous two Thieves, in Deadly Shadows I completed atleast 3 levels by banging everyone in the back + arrows.
You have the option to go stealthy or to kick their asses. And, as you saw, if you get spotted and try to duel with those enemies, it will be hard.

This has always been the case. With every thief game ever.
You can kill everyone, or you can go in stealth and knock people out or sneak past.

But that's how it should be, if you get seen you need to run and try to escape rather than beating everyone up.
You're a thief not an assassin.
The most important part about Thief is also the one nobody is talking about. I don't mind these next gen features such as focus or evasive dashes or anything like that, because the three most important elements appear to be intact; The role of shadow, the role of sound, and the role of AI. So right there you have the most important mechanics that make Thief what it is.The really important part is level design. What made the original games so fucking incredible was incredible level design, especially in Thief 2. Huge labyrinths with dozens of possible approaches, epic journeys through the rooftops of a city, robbing a massive bank. That's what made those games fun. This is what will make or break Thief 4.

You didnt have to restart, you had to throw a flash bomb and run and hide, or just run and hide.
Or use a speed potion, or invis potion, or jump really high off something and use a slow fall potion, and use a rope arrow and climb somewhere to run away.
Thief 1 and 2 especially gave a shitload of ways to deal with being seen.
Thief shouldnt really put any focus on "action" because Thief was the game you go to for pure stealth, which doesnt seem to be as much of the case with Thief 4, sure the option is there but its not 100% built around that like 2 was. Thief 1 tried focusing on action with all the monsters and shit you HAD to kill and was worse of a game, then 2 came out, got rid of all that, and is honestly one of the best designed games ever made.

What's the fun in that?
It is stealthy to just knock someone the fuck out.
Arrow to the face is brutal though, now you're a thief-murderer.
checkpoints in my thief game ?
