Anthony Ruelas watched for what seemed like an eternity as his classmate wheezed and gagged in a desperate struggle to breathe.
The girl told classmates that she was having an asthma attack, but her teacher refused to let anyone leave the classroom, according to NBC affiliate KCEN. Instead, the teacher emailed the school nurse and waited for a reply, telling students to stay calm and remain in their seats.
When the girl fell out of her chair several minutes later, Ruelas decided he couldn’t take it anymore and took action.
“We ain’t got time to wait for no email from the nurse,” a teacher’s report quotes him as saying, according to Fox News Latino.
And with that, the 15-year-old Gateway Middle School student carried his stricken classmate to the nurse’s office, violating his teacher’s orders.
What a horrible student. Not adhering to instructions is worth a punishment right?
Adding insult to injury, Cortes said the school called her Wednesday morning wanting to know why her son was absent. She had to remind them they suspended him.
Are you fucking kidding me

What are they going to do if there is an intruder on campus, email the police?
"Oh my student is having a medical emergency, let me just email the nurse and wait five minutes for her to come rather than get her to a medical professional as soon as possible"
Teacher should be the one being suspended.
Teacher should be the one being suspended.
Teacher should be fired, she endangered the life of a student by doing nothing during an emergency.
when I saw the title I was expecting something really sensationalist, where there was actually gonna be way more to the story
but nope that's really what it was lmao wow, fuck that teacher + school
You'd think they'd have given the kid a job well done for doing that , actions the teacher should've done.
Sucks about the suspension though
You can't make this shit up.
Why teachers so fucking retarded when it comes to medical emergencies?
I mean come on, is it so fucking important to enforce some rule that it's worth risking lives over it?
"Oh my student is having a medical emergency, let me just email the nurse and wait five minutes for her to come rather than get her to a medical professional as soon as possible"
It's that scene form the IT crowd where he emails the fire department.
This is so retarded. I can understand the suspension part if you are that one-sided on your rules (and schools shouldn't be) but forgetting he's suspended? How do they employ these people?
John Craft, superintendent of the Killeen Independent School District, said in a statement that he could not discuss the suspension.
“The District is unable to provide details related to the matter as it pertains to information involving student discipline and/or health records,” the statement said. “In an effort to protect students’ rights to confidentiality granted under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the details of the investigation and/or disciplinary actions may not be provided by the district at this time. The Killeen ISD maintains the safety of our students, staff and campuses as a priority and applauds the efforts of students who act in good faith to assist others in times of need.”
I wonder how the fuck can anyone say so much bullshit with a straight face.

Applauding them by suspending them, go figure.
What did the parents of the asthma kid have to say about this?
I'm pretty sure they'd be extremely thankful for a kid saving their own kid's life. They'd probably be outraged too that he got suspended.

Welcome to the age of Zero Tolerance.
Some time ago there was a thread on here about a guy who was being forced to pay for a door he broke to help get kids out of a burning school.

The amount of rules and stupid bullshit teachers are spooked into believe about what can happen is ridiculous. Some go as far as to ensure no teachers ever touch a student regardless the situation to avoid possible law cases. There are also some health things about what nurses are certified in and what obviously teachers would never be certified in that play a factor.
Jesus Christ this is the IT Crowd episode where Moss emails the fire brigade when the office catches fire.

That statement is complete bullshit in an attempt for the district to blameshift it to something else so higher ups don't look bad

In other words, bureaucracy once again screwing things up.
I can understand a reprimand since there's a very real risk that the boy might have dropped his classmate and she'd be incurring further injury. But outright suspension is pants-on-head retarded.
Some next level bullshit is that they have to email the nurse in an emergency situation. Time is precious, get them on the phone and have someone show up to treat her or cart her to the nurse's office. That boy put it best: "fuck that we ain’t got time to wait for no email from the nurse"
Schools here in the US really need an overhaul and so do the teachers.
Good luck with that though because for some reason many teachers get tenure (at least near me), making it almost impossible to fire them.
Typical Texas school day.

Pretty much, the amount of bullshit that teachers get fed(source: my mom is on her 41st year as a music teacher), is appalling. Honestly I can't think that in this situation the teacher was thinking about anything but her job, which still does not justify her lack of action but I can understand a bit where she is most likely coming from.
I'd be proud if that was my kid.
I'd take him out to his favorite restaurant and buy him a video game :v:
How ridiculous. A girl is on the ground unable to breathe and your thought is to send an email and wait
The teacher should be put on leave for being that stupid and lacking any kind of common sense, and the school board should be fucking SLAMMED for making that policy

The school would be extremely lucky if the kid's parents or the ones of the kid who had the Asthma attack aren't talking to lawyers right now.
I bet it gets worse. I bet there wasn't even a nurse there and it's similar to how my school was. There was a High School, a Middle School, a Primary School, and a 4th school for 5th-6th grade Where I lived. All 4 shared a single nurse that spent about 2 hours in each in a day. If you had to see the nurse, and she wasn't there, you waited. Or if she had already left, you didn't see one. But at least my school had the common sense to call an ambulance if it was required. When one student had a heart attack and died during swimming class, they didn't send an email and sit on their asses, they called 911 and gave him CPR until they showed up

Exactly how mine was, quite appalling.

:10bux: says their lawyers already have a statement ready to go back to some school board/PTA meeting where this issue was brought up for discussion and voted on; which PTA/school board meetings generally have a non existent turn out of parents. Really all the school has to do to resolve this is just stall it until students and parents forget/stop caring
“We ain’t got time to wait for no email from the nurse,” a teacher’s report quotes him as saying
Screw the school, this kid is an action hero in the making, deserves a medal.
I mean shit, that's the kind of badass thing I would daydream about in school and he even had his wits to say a fucking sweet one liner before carrying off a sick girl like John-fucking-McClane.
If I were the parent of a kid with asthma (if you could change schools at will) I'd switch schools faster than the speed of light for the safety of my kid.
Because seriously, fuck their policy. I hope they get sued to hell.
