http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-21547947
Fresh evidence that Apple has been working on a smart watch concept since at least 2011 has emerged in a patent filing. The document describes a flexible touchscreen display which would communicate with a smartphone or other electronic device. It coincides with a report from a tech consultancy suggesting there is huge pent up demand for such a gadget. But ABI Research warns that battery life issues still need to be addressed. It says assuming such problems can be resolved, about 485 million wearable computing devices might ship by 2018, providing a significant growth opportunity for Apple and the wider consumer electronics industry. Not all published patents lead to actual products, but Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times have all published reports this month saying sources had confirmed Apple was experimenting with a watch-like device. The iPhone-maker declined to comment when contacted by the BBC.
That's pretty cool. Too bad they'll probably overburden it with useless shit.
That's pretty cool. Too bad they'll probably overburden it with useless shit.
apple may do a number of things wrong, but I really can't think of a time they've "overburdened" their products with "useless shit" (aside from iTunes for windows) that's more like several different hardware manufactures for android devices

Sounds cool, at least they're innovating now.
which would communicate with a smartphone or other electronic device.
Didn't something like this already get made for android phones?
Didn't something like this already get made for android phones?
As far as i know it was horrible in terms of using the thing. As in, very hard to do simple tasks. Knowing Apple, they will streamline it to make it perfectly easy to use and i guess it will also look nice. Apple used to come up with clever products but since the iPhone 5 its been pretty.. Low..
A watch is meant to check the time and/or set alarms. Nothing more, nothing less.
A phone was just to call and text people, look now.
Didn't something like this already get made for android phones?
Yes, there are more probably.
Sounds cool, at least they're innovating now.
No, not really. There are a few Android-based smart watches out already. There are rumors for a Samsung Galaxy Smartwatch codenamed "Altius". -Snip automerge- Also isn't one of the ipod mini's basically a smartwatch already?
That is a REALLY, REALLY thin wrist.
-Snip automerge- Also isn't one of the ipod mini's basically a smartwatch already?
Yes, but it's little more than a touch-screen iPod nano. One would assume that this will have some version of iOS on it. [editline]23rd February 2013[/editline]
That UI is far too classy for Samsung, where is the touchpiss at?
It's a watch and it's in beta. Touchwiz is designed for full sized phones, not a 1" watch.
Sounds cool, at least they're innovating now.
No it isnt. It's just making it so that the Ipod Nano has a legal patent against wrist mounted electronics.
This is one of the most exciting Android ones, Pebble: http://getpebble.com/

Well you can treat the iPod Nano 6th Generation like a watch, albeit a slightly bulky one.
Didn't something like this already get made for android phones?
Rather, a watch that runs Android. My parent (who runs a lot) wears one of these as a fancy running logger.

I would prefer to have something like this made by Google that works in tandem with their new Glass concept, that way I'd be able to control it without shouting voice commands like a moron. [editline]23rd February 2013[/editline] Either way wearable tech like this is something I've wanted ever since I was a kid. Hopefully since Apple is doing it the concept will become more popular!

I'm actually very excited about this, I've been considering for awhile of buying a sixth gen nano and a metal watch band, I really like the idea of a touch screen watch. Mind you this is coming from the guy with like six watches...
That is a REALLY, REALLY thin wrist.
Steve Jobs modeled for that before he died.

I've seen people running n64 games on it. Sucks that it got discontinued.
I still wish I would've patented this before all these big companies. Shared the idea of a watch phone with my friends a few years ago after playing a lot of Fallout, but everybody said "No that's a dumb idea."
Why the hell would you want to play n64 games on a watch...
Because you can.
It looks like the screen blends in with the band. That or the entire band is a screen (unlikely). Say what you want about Apple but you gotta admit that looks fucking snazzy.
