"Alcohol has been the main cause of mortality on roads since 2006," according to road security authorities. About a third of fatalities on French roads is due to drink driving, a rate that far surpasses the 17 percent recorded in Britain or 10 percent in Germany. According to a survey published Sunday, just over half of respondents -- 57 percent -- said they have yet to equip their vehicles with breathalyzer tests. Those who fail to do so risk a fine of 11 euros ($14) from November 1, 2012, when the penalty comes into force. Drivers are split over the measure. "I find it absurd to be booked for that. But it's the law, so I'll be subject to it," said Hamou Louachiche, 38, who still does not have a test in his car. He believes that such tests would be more useful in bars or nightclubs. Others however welcome the measure, saying it would reduce drink driving.
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/breathalyzer-tests-compulsory-vehicles-france-162910224.html I guess you get what you vote for.
Oh wah I have to be sober to operate a 2000lb. death machine
Oh wah I have to be sober to operate a 2000lb. death machine
Nobody is complaining about taking measures to stop drunk driving. They just think that this is going too far.
This sounds retarded and costly. But I remember reading somewhere that drunk drivers on average drive intoxicated 80+ times before their caught.
I bet if this was America someone would of posted. This does seem a bit excessive to prevent drunk drivers.
Nobody is complaining about taking measures to stop drunk driving. They just think that this is going too far.
In response to OP and title, can't tell if it's sarcasm or not.
It seems impractical to implement, but cars should have built in breathalyzers IMO. 33% of traffic fatalities due to alcohol is ridiculous.
I don't know what purpose these are going to serve anyway. Are you supposed to test yourself every time? Who/how will they enforce this?
I prefer the Swedish method of just jailing you for over a year first offense, but honestly taking any measures is good. At least here in the States, people do it all the damned time because DUI offenses are basically nothing unless you kill someone.
This won't solve the problem at all. And what about responsible persons who don't drink at all when they have to drive afterwards? Why should they buy this?
I don't know what purpose these are going to serve anyway. Are you supposed to test yourself every time? Who/how will they enforce this?
From what I hear car breathalyzer tests as implemented in the states require you to blow into something periodically while driving, to prevent your sober buddy from blowing into it and sending you on your way. That seems tremendously annoying for the majority of the population who isn't god damned retarded enough to drive drunk.
it would be kinda cool if you had some kind of unique ID system, where you had a retina or fingerprint scan to start your vehicle, then a breathalyzer test and if you were over the legal limit the car wouldn't start. or something carrying a breathalyzer in your car however... it just seems a bit pointless. it doesn't get to the root of the problem.
I prefer the Swedish method of just jailing you for over a year first offense
Yeah... it doesn't work that way here. They just revoke your drivers license and give you a fee pretty much.
then a breathalyzer test and if you were over the legal limit the car wouldn't start.
That's what this is, isn't it? Like in 40-Year-Old Virgin.
I personally don't see a point in this,if you're drunk already you're obviously not going to use it anyway...
That's what this is, isn't it? Like in 40-Year-Old Virgin.
if it is what i depicted then i'm all for it. the article's a bit vague however as to what the process actually is
Oh wah I have to be sober to operate a 2000lb. death machine
So are you in favor of DRM in games? Because this is the same tactic as DRM. Everyone is a suspect and everyone must abide, regardless of whether or not they're innocent or guilty. It's treating people who've never had a drop of alcohol in their lives the same as raging alcoholics, just as paying customers are treated like pirates.
Wow, this seems more invasive then it really needs to be. What about the sober guys or people who just flat out don't drink?
It seems impractical to implement, but cars should have built in breathalyzers IMO. 33% of traffic fatalities due to alcohol is ridiculous.
I have to agree. I've used cars where the ignition is locked with a breathalyzer and it just takes a few measly extra seconds to start the car. Worth it.
Just to clarify this decision has been made BEFORE the new socialist government was elected. It was already being endorsed by the right wing government about a year ago.
Wow, this seems more invasive then it really needs to be. What about the sober guys or people who just flat out don't drink?
Nope we must fight crime by treating everyone like a criminal. [editline]2nd July 2012[/editline]
I have to agree. I've used cars where the ignition is locked with a breathalyzer and it just takes a few measly extra seconds to start the car. Worth it.
That isn't the point. That's the same kind of logic that got the TSA put in place here in the US. "It's not that much trouble, and if you've done nothing wrong then you have nothing to worry about!" It doesn't work out that way in practice. Treating everyone like suspects in a crime that hasn't even been committed yet never works. The whole convenience argument is inherently flawed, too. Just because it's convenient when it's implemented does not mean it's going to stay convenient.
Except it provides only benefits everyone.
I don't understand what you are saying. Treating everyone like a suspect in a hypothetical crime they haven't even committed yet benefits everyone? So would you be okay getting a pat-down every time you go to the local Denny's just in case one person is packing heat?
Except it provides only benefits everyone.
This doesn't benefit anybody - how does putting breathalyzer tests, separate from the vehicle, in vehicles stop drunk drivers from driving?
How about a law that requires you to surrender your keys at bars and nightclubs and take a breathalyzer to retrieve them upon departure? I know people don't just get wasted at bars and nightclubs, but I think they should at least try that first before doing something so extreme.
I really don't care, but i just wanna point our the nipple in the picture
If you're drunk, you wont test yourself with this. This is just a stupid attempt to get make a certain company profitable. Think about this: a cheap breathalyser costs ~12 Euro. The state takes ~20% tax (2 Euro) Now multiply that by the amount of cars in France + the ammount of tourists that pass through France by car. There are over 32 million cars in FR. Some company is going to make a killing.

But you're right video game piracy is exactly the same as a large steel object hurtling towards pedestrians at 60mph they both kill people
