Nintendo of America has filed a lawsuit against HackYourConsole.com, a website that sells pirated Nintendo games and devices that allow users to "hack" the Nintendo DS, 3DS and Wii, the company announced today.
The lawsuit was filed in the South District of Florida against the owners of the website, which also offers devices that allow a workaround for the console's security systems.
According to a statement from Nintendo, the HackYourConsole.com owners have "developed a global business" from selling unauthorized copies of Nintendo's titles and devices such as the R4 cartridge in order to play pirated games and break through security on Nintendo's handhelds. The site also states it is an authorized carrier for 3DS Gateway flashcards, cartridges that work similar to R4 cards.
For a fee, HackYourConsole.com also offers services to modify and circumvent security systems on the Wii to allow users to play illegally-obtained games.
In July, Nintendo announced it had won a long-standing legal battle against two distributors of R4 devices. A Tokyo court ruled that the offending R4 sellers must pay Nintendo along with a number of other companies, including Square Enix and Capcom, a total of $944,966.25 USD in damages.
They were outlawed in Japan last fall as well.
A pretty genuine lawsuit, seeing as that site was selling pirated games.
You can do the same shit with Homebrew for free anyways. The difference is that Homebrew doesn't go out and say "PLAY PIRATED GAMES" and they don't charge money for it.

I didn't agree at first, but after reading that it makes more sense
I came here expecting them to be shutting down a homebrew website and I had a remark about how that won't help Nintendo sales; But in this case they actually are in the right.
I was worried for wiibrew at first :(

You can do the same thing with an SD card and 20 minutes of your time at home. I'm surprised they aren't going after the people who are finding the exploits like Apple were. Going after pirate distribution won't stop much seeing as the apps required are easy to get.
SNIP IM AN IDIOT
Only rated as late as NOW they are getting around to doing something about this?

Reread the article. It was a site selling modified consoles and bootleg games on there, plus offering a services to have your Wii, DS, or 3DS be modified so it can play the illegal copies of games.

I was mostly commenting on the quote in the quote, but whatever. It does make more sense when the site is offering modification of other devices as well, but my point still stands, I'm surprised they aren't going after the people finding and publishing the exploits more, seeing as the Wii was hacked basically since day one until the end.

The one thing I really liked about the R4 cartridge that every iteration of the DS still fails to include, even with the existing eShop is that it allowed you to play music on your DS as an mp3 player. Why does this functionality still not exist, especially with the SD card storage on the 3DS?
Also, the functionality to use the DS as a graphing calculator where the bottom screen is the buttons. Backlit ti-83+ was pretty neat.

the 3DS and Dsi have a music player.
The Dsi version can't play Mp3's though irrc, but the 3DS one can.

Does it allow you to listen to an album in it's entirety or playlists? I swear I messed with this and had a lot of trouble with it. Maybe I'm just stupid/negligent.

I haven't used it in a while, but iirc the way it works is you make a folder called music, then put all the music in that.
and if you have any collections/albums/specific sets you make a subfolder for it, and it will play each song in the subfolder one song at a time, or whatever song you want.

Good to know. Can't test this right now, but I'll try to eventually.
