Alleged killer Jonathon Andrew Stenberg is still at large as police continue to scour bushland on Darwin's outskirts.
The search, using dogs and a helicopter with thermal imaging equipment is entering its third night, after Stenberg was last sighted on Tuesday.
Police have said an off-duty police officer spotted Stenberg, recognised his car and took off after him, but lost sight of the wanted man.
After the officer called for reinforcements, Stenberg's abandoned Mazda ute was found with a firearm inside.
Despite a huge police search employing more than 100 officers, dogs and a helicopter with thermal imaging equipment, Mr Stenberg has eluded capture.
He could be armed, possibly with a handgun, police have said.
The 45 sq km area police have concentrated on in Darwin's fringe includes lots of homes on large properties, and bushland.
On Tuesday police said there had been "numerous reports of activity" in the search area.
A police source said barking dogs pointed to locations where Stenberg, aged 46, may have been, but there were no obvious signs of his presence such as home break-ins or vehicles stolen.
Stenberg is believed to have been a member of the Australian Defence Force, where he worked as an engineer, and police have said he had skills to survive in the bush.
The wanted man allegedly decapitated 54-year-old Edward Kelly from Broadwater in NSW last week. Mr Kelly's head has not been recovered.
With police resources in Darwin stretched to the limit, many local people took to Facebook to praise the work of officers taking part in the search.
Nearly 3000 people "liked" a request on the NT Police Facebook page for support for police who were working around the clock.
Sounds like this Stenberg character gets ahead of the police once more.
It also sounds like he's getting some head.
Hah wow, it's not everyday my city gets in the news for something newsworthy. I'm gonna have to go through some of the roadblocks on Sunday if they haven't found him yet.
