FORGOT TO MENTION N97 IS WAYYY MORE EXPENSIVE -- MORE THAN 500 EUROS!
As you all know, the first touchscreen N Series phone is coming out (already did in Europe/Asia); N97. Also the iPhone 3G S just started selling in North America. There's no doubt that the two phones are strong competition to each other. They will have about the same speed 3G.
Currently, I'm considering N97 more because it doesn't have the APP store shit and jailbreaking is not required to run 3rd party, unapproved apps. PLUS unlike iPhoneOS, Symbian (N97) lets you see it from inside out (file browsers) and is WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY more customizable. Also, N97 DOES have the Omni Store but you DON'T have to use it.
More small crap on N97 that's good:
-Java - run it, develop it, whatever it
-Flash Player - self-explanatory
-PHYSICAL off-screen QWERTY Keyboard.
NEW! For the 3G S:
-it can finally record videos -_-
But... I NEED HELP CHOOSING! I'm getting one or the other. I want to see the Facepunch opinion.
Picture time
N97

-Don't say crap like get the Blackberry Storm or HTC Dream. N97 or 3G S!!!
LET THE BATTLE BEGIN![/b[
I hate Apple products (hurr) and I've never even heard of this phone so I can't pass judgment.
N97 (previous iPhone owner).
Go for the N97. In the long run, seems like a better choice.
get a
Well, I'm no Apple fan. But if you are going to play some games and shit then go for the Iphone. I don't think the n97 have done any well on mobile bench tests.
I've got an iPhone and it rocks. I can't see me ever moving to a non touchscreen phone now.
get the iphone
N97, go for it, I have 5800, the XpressMusic, midrange version of it, and I love it!
Do it!
I have a G1. I would like to try out an iPhone before I judge.
flash doesn't work well on mobile devices. there's a reason apple didn't include all of the "bells and whistles" on previous iPhones, and that's because they wanted to wait until they could make it perfect. flash runs like total shit on any mobile device. get the 3GS.
and if you want customizability, fucking JAILBREAK it.
Everyone looks at the iPhone and immediately complains about how hard typing stuff using a touchscreen keyboard must be, but once you get the hang of it it ends up being faster than phones with built in keyboards - because you can lightly tap away as fast as you want, you don't have to worry about actually pushing down the tiny keys (sounds stupid but is true.)
You're kidding, right? How is the App Store "bullshit"? I know most of the apps aren't exactly fucking beautiful, but you have an amazing amount of big companies, such as nameco and EA creating iPhone divisions. Not only that, but there are TONS of individual developers that are creating unbelievable applications. Not only games, but applications for things that prove actually useful. You don't HAVE to use the App Store either.
To develop for the N97, you need to know..wait, what the hell? Seriously? It's like the Palm Pre. Java Web Runtime. I'm not even going to comment, that's fucking hilarious.
Jailbreaking is quite the useful tool. Except I RARELY use Cydia or anything besides a theme or two. Want customization? Take off 3 minutes off your life (oh wait) and just do it.
Ah, Flash. Good times. I don't understand why everyone cares about it so much on a PHONE though. Really, the only thing I'd use Flash on my phone for is probably Youtube. BUT WAIT! I have a Youtube app, who the hell needs flash. I'd understand why you want it on your phone, because you don't have a youtube application, but if you want it for any other reason it's bullshit. Good luck playing a flash game on your phone.
As for your hardware QWERTY keyboard, meh. I got used to the touch keyboard almost immediately on my iPhone. :\
Now you're probably thinking, "LOLiFANBOY" (lolol, loli fanboy), but I'm not. Well, I sort of am, but I actually try out the competition before mindlessly attacking the phone. I dearly want a Palm Pre and a Hero, so bad.
JESUS CHRIST THE PRICE ON THAT THING IS HORRIBLE. Go for the iPhone 3GS.

Since when are you forced to use the app store?
If the computing power of the Nokia is somewhat similar or better I think I'd prefer the symbian OS over the propitiatory apple one. But if the appstore(and Cydia) provide a larger better selection the 3gs is looking pretty nice.
This is coming from an iPhone3G(not s) owner.
i used windows mobile phones 420 before I got my iPhone.. it was nice at first, but I finally accepted the fact that all HTC was trying to do was make phones more like the iPhone.. it did exactly what steve jobs said it would do - revolutionize mobile phones. every phone nowadays is compared to the iPhone. "COMPARED TO THE IPHONE, THE TOUCH SCREEN" blah blah, you know it's fucking true. symbian is slow outdated garbage, windows mobile's 3 man dev team needs to stop playing with their dicks, and you need to get yourself a 3GS.

I don't see how having a flash player could possibly work on such a tiny screen, the only use would be flash apps specifically for the N67.
Java seems like a bit of a non feature too, you want phone apps to be fast and generally platform specific so they can make use of the phone's features.
Comment regarding OPs claim about appstore
He's probably dissatisfied with the way apple monitors everything that goes in so closely leaving the device not used to its full potential(no emulators, no system tweaks), I am too but for games it's certainly rather nice. I'm aware of and like Cydia but I'm sure those kinds of things would be way more advanced if the appstore allowed them.
Oh god, finally some people are getting the whole "Flash on a phone" thing.
I love you all.

You started out well, the bolded parts sounds really fucking retarded. You should read up more.

Or better yet. Own the god damn phone before you speak.
People on busses that get on and every fucking minute they fiddle with the damn iPhone. That is fucking annoying.
The Nokia N97 is more of a phone.

Your arguments are all shit. The app store is awful because you have no option but to use it to install apps. There's nothing wrong with the java mobile platform at all, especially on new phones which tend to have special processors for it, meaning it's nice and snappy.
Jailbreaking shouldn't be required. The only reason I bought mine is because it's possible to jailbreak in the first place. Without jailbreaking the OS is worthless garbage.
Flash is incredibly useful. The browser on the iphone/ipod is let down because of its lack of support. Sure you can go on youtube, but what about any other sites? BBC news videos etc?
Touchscreen keyboards are never going to be as good as their hardware counterparts, but yes the iphone's one is very good. The N97 costs less than the 3gs without a contract.

And you are basing this fact solely on the above observation?

Cool, a Youtube app. I have one in my phone too. Oh, I have 14 Flash games too that I ripped from the web :). Wait, you don't believe me right? Here, http://forum.dailymobile.se/index.php/topic,989.0.html get them all.

Are there any videos of flash working on an N67, because I honestly don't see how it can work well at all.
And you are basing this fact solely on the above observation?
No, it's what's called an "Opinion".
Isn't this thread asking us to choose for the OP? Which If I recall correctly isn't the done thing?
Are there any videos of flash working on an N67, because I honestly don't see how it can work well at all.
No of course it won't work, since N67 doesn't exist.

I don't see how a bus can play flash videos anyway.
Oh, if you were meaning the N97, yes flash videos works. I can open flv files and watch them.

There's a difference between a useful informed opinion and just something you made up because you hate iPhone users and Apple.
