(CNN) -- If you blink during the video, you might miss the moment Jonah's tomb in Mosul, Iraq, explodes. The first few frames show the revered shrine towering over its landscape. There's a sudden burst of dust, fire and smoke. Then, nothing. CNN could not immediately confirm the authenticity of the video, which was posted to YouTube. The holy site is thought to be the burial place of the prophet Jonah, who was swallowed by a whale or fish in both the Islamic and Judeo-Christian traditions. Militants belonging to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, planted explosives around the tomb and detonated the explosion remotely Thursday, civil defense officials there told CNN. The tomb was inside a Sunni mosque called the Mosque of the Prophet Younis. ISIS is waging war against the Iraqi government and has taken over several cities. It is seeking to create an Islamic caliphate that encompasses parts of Iraq and Syria and has begun imposing Sharia law in the towns it controls. The group has threatened to destroy any shrine it deems un-Islamic. Christian families fled Mosul this month after the al Qaeda splinter group issued an ultimatum to Iraqi Christians living there: either convert to Islam, pay a fine or face "death by the sword." ISIS has blown up several Sunni holy sites in the last few weeks in Mosul. Last month, it destroyed seven Shiite places of worship in the predominantly Shiite Turkmen city of Tal Afar, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) west of Mosul, Human Rights Watch has reported, citing local sources.
http://www.cnn.com/2014/07/24/world/iraq-violence/index.html What should we do about these shitheads?
On one of the two most prominent mounds of Nineveh ruins, rises the Mosque (an Nestorian-Assyrian Church before) of prophet Younis "Biblical Jonah", the son of Amittai, from the 8th century BC which is believed to be the burial place of him, and where King Esarhaddon had once built a palace. This old shrine standing on the site of a Christian church is a stone's throw from the built-up walls and gates of Nineveh. In the middle of the mosque stood a sepulcher, covered with a Persian carpet of silk and silver, and at the four corners, great copper candlesticks with wax tapers, besides several lamps and ostrich shells that hung down from the roof. A whale's tooth, appropriate to Jonah's well-known adventure at sea, is said to be preserved there. It is one of the most important mosques in Mosul and one of the few historic mosques that are found in the east side of the city. On July 24, 2014, the building was destroyed by explosives set by forces of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.[1]
Isn't that just counter-productive, how the fuck is a 1274 year old Mosque un-islamic. Unless they are trying to wipe out traces of Islam they don't see that fits their specific niche of brutal murder and twisted ideology.
Unless they are trying to wipe out traces of Islam they don't see that fits their specific niche of brutal murder and twisted ideology.
Vast tolerant empires that encouraged trade and learning between different peoples.
OK, i'm genuinely curious, what do they expect to gain out of this except for more opposition?
Fucking savages.
Honestly the lowest form of human scum and no respect towards theirs own history.

I bet the ones who blew it up didn't even know that Jonah (who's burial place they blew up) is a prophet in islamic scripture too. They just saw that it's a popular place for christians to visit and went ahead with the explosives
OK, i'm genuinely curious, what do they expect to gain out of this except for more opposition?
That was my first thought. Seriously, what's their game plan here?
That was my first thought. Seriously, what's their game plan here?
They're a bunch of backward thinking cavemen. They have no plan, just to invoke chaos, and have THEIR way of thinking toward everyone. It's too bad, because more and more people are joining them every day. A lot of people believe in the propaganda over there.
Fuck them even harder. I hated them before, but now I despise them with every bone in my body. Thanks for making historians and archeologist's jobs that much fucking harder assholes.

That really hurt to watch...
destroying a tomb of a prophet that teaches to never lose faith is sure making me lose faith in humanity
The tomb was inside a Sunni mosque called the Mosque of the Prophet Younis.
If I remember correctly, the Sunnis and the Shias don't get along well, especially in Iraq. If this is the case, it may have been a move to win the support of the Shias. Regretable and barbaric, anyway
I never thought I would see the day where Al Qaeda would be considered a lesser evil

Wow. I really was not ready for how blown up that thing got. It's fucking gone.

This is just like the Taliban again, destroying ancient marvels of craftsmanship. I dont know why but it depresses me the most of all the things they have done so far. =/ I feel really bad for feeling that
What should we do about these shitheads?
Nukes. Detonate one right in front of their faces.
This is just like the Taliban again, destroying ancient marvels of craftsmanship. I dont know why but it depresses me the most of all the things they have done so far. =/
It shouldn't. Yes, it sucks, but at the end of the day it's still just an old building. Its destruction is nothing compared to the human suffering being caused by ISIS' occupation. I'd blow the building up myself if it meant saving even one group of Iraqis from being driven out into the desert and shot in the back of the head, as they've been doing every single day.
Nukes. Detonate one right in front of their faces.
And destroy more history? No fucking thanks.
I fucking hate people who not only vandalize a sacred historical place, but to fucking obliterate it that the remaining relics are scattered throughout the wind. I'm a believer in preserving history, and a lover of history so this breaks my heart.
And destroy more history? No fucking thanks.
Do it in an open desert then.
Do it in an open desert then.
you never know what's under the sand, especially in the Middle East, the birthplace of civilization.
ISIS sounds more and more like a badly written bad guy army (being evil just to be evil) from US Shooter games.
This is a testament of their savagery. It deserves damnation. But, it's their imposition of Sharia law that calls for outrage. Dark times for the innocents that they reign over.
just destroying mankind's history here [editline]24th July 2014[/editline] its sad and sick that just a few twisted fucks can destroy something millions of men labored over hundreds of years to build and maintain, that has been the worshiping site for so many hundreds of millions of people
This is a testament of their savagery. It deserves damnation. But, it's their imposition of Sharia law that calls for outrage. Dark times for the innocents that they reign over.
innocents needs to pick arms and start slaying any fanatic scum on sight .... no mercy no prisoners ...
you never know what's under the sand, especially in the Middle East, the birthplace of civilization.
Would be a small loss compared to the good you'd do for this world.
