The Ontario government says it will introduce legislation that prohibits payments for blood or plasma donations in the province.
The issue of paying donors has been contentious ever since clinics began popping up last year — two in Toronto and one in Hamilton.
The federal government has said it will respect any provincial and territorial decisions related to compensation.
Oh yeah, that's a swell idea. Take away a source of supplemental income that some people get for trying to help other people out.
I never donate unless I'm either paid or the blood is being given away for free with no associated fees.
Nobody should profit off of donated blood.

except for you?
except for you?
If I'm selling it, it isn't donated, is it?
Thing is, if you are going to give an institution your precious lifeblood, you should at least be paid for it. If you can't get gold for crimson, what's the point in just giving it away beyond charitable reasons? Alternatively they could probably just pay you with cookies instead. Cookies for Crimson.
Strange, I wonder how a currency system based around blood would work? Probably not too well since blood can go off and coagulate.
I never understand the logic behind benefits for donations. If you're getting something for the service/money you give, then it's a transaction, not a donation.
well thanks province I live in, now I have no more initiative to be stuck with a needle, be sucked of my blood, feel like I'm going to faint, anymore to help some other person that may need it.
Shit, I didn't even know there was a place you could sell your blood in Toronto.
Better go sell as much as I can before it's gone.
the whole point of payment is for plasma or large quantities of blood, since they both require a substantial amount on your part, plasma requires a lot of time, and large amounts of blood will lay you up for a while, so to make up in lost time you should be compensated
what is wrong with this...

its about doing what you can for charity?
the original intent of the blood banks were for the war effort

What he is saying is is that if the blood he is giving will be free for all, then he will donate it, but if it costs some one something, then he will sell it.

I just imagine this happening..
Quick, this man needs a transfusion; STAT!
Okay, that comes to ninety nine, ninety five.. will that be cash or card, Sir.
thats not what the fee is for, its to encourage people to keep the supplies up beyond what donations alone can raise

I'm sorry, what other state is there? You're either getting paid, or you're not getting paid.

The problem with paying for blood donations is that it entices people to work the system and give more blood than one should, just to get money for it.
Again. So? Blood has a value, hospitals have to pay for it from these donation stands, Rather stimulate the economy than have people just take blood from people and profit off of it by selling it to hospitals.
Woah, I never even knew you could get paid for giving away blood.

I get paid, and the organization that took the blood can then also get paid.
If if I give it away for free, then the organization gives it away without charge.
The state that is a problem is: I donate, and then the organization charges someone else for it.
That is the third state, and the one I disagree with.
You don't get paid for it in the UK, beyond the chocolate bar and squash you get afterwards :v: Then again, it's the NHS who does all the collection.

It can encourage people to lie on the pre-donation questionnaires that aim to screen out people with blood bourne diseases, or at a high risk of having them.

I ate their entire biscuit collection when I gave blood - definitely got my money's worth.

legions of garry's mod server admins would like to have a word with you
Well I don't hold much confidence in a system that still tells me I can't donate blood because I occasionally like to fuck men.
The blood is sold after you donate it? Here in Denmark you don't get paid for donating, but who the fuck has to pay for blood in a hospital?
I donate blood whenever I can. I have A+ blood and they say it's rare in my area, which means it might not get used every time. But the Red Cross sends me a letter every time my blood gets used and saves someone! It's a great feeling, almost as great as I feel after I eat all of their food after donating.
In Russia from what I've read you donate blood and get a pack of food: some meat, bread, water, milk, hematogen bars and other shit.

They do this in the UK too, you get cookies and Mars bars and shit to help with your blood sugar aswell as somewhere to sit. The last thing they need is for people collapsing as they walk out the door but I've always thought it was normal to be paid for donating blood in the US

Paying people to donate blood encourages people who wouldn't otherwise be eligible to donate to lie during the pre-screening

I actually really want to donate blood, I turned 18 just a little while ago but they only work on weekdays and I can't really skip university now can I. [sp]even though they do give you a note that allows you to skip 3 work/study days it's gonna be troublesome[/sp]
