• Does time actually exist?

I just finished viewing "Hot Tub Time Machine" the movie and was wondering if time actually existed. I mean like if you go back in time and died would you just become yourself in said time period. Or would you cease to exist as yourself but your younger self would continue to live. Or is time just a measurement we just use and space is only existent but we can only perceive what's going on forwards in time although if we could alter space we could easily go back eons ago. Another thought, is time a butterfly effect? Like we went back in time with our brothers and sisters and killed our grandfather would we all cease to exist. Just some thoughts I am having and was wondering if you guys could assist me.
Oh no, another one of these threads... Why not ask, "Am I real?"

oh dear god more shitty philosophy threads. We can't go back in time, there is no such thing as time travel.
fuck ninjas, nvm.
You are clearly high. Only that could cause one viewing "Hot Tub Time Machine" to question the existence of time.
Who cares.
This should go into Fast Threads.
Time exists but you can not travel backwards in it. Though you could travel forwards in it. Do some reading on "spacetime" And get a better taste in movies you silly git!
Sounds like Willie Nelsons having another "HIGHdea"
Read Julian Barbour's "The end of time" for an interesting take on the idea that time is just an illusion. Lots of advanced math involved, and you'll also need a working knowledge of physics.
You sure you just didn't smoke a joint OP?
Time isn't real. Time is just a measurement we just as events. We use time as a way of saying what event happened and at what point did it happen at. At least that's what I think. Don't take a fiction movie about a time traveling hot tub so seriously kay?
Technically if you travel faster than light speed then you can travel backwards in time. But that's another story. [editline]12:49AM[/editline]
Time isn't real. Time is nothing but a ruler invented by man to make us more organized. Your birthday is a lie.

[editline]12:49AM[/editline] nope special relativity look it up son
That's because time isn't the constant, light is. Time exist but not in the way you think of it now
Time isn't real. Time is just a measurement we just as events. We use time as a way of saying what event happened and at what point did it happen at.
l2 special relativity
That's because time isn't the constant, light is. Time exist but not in the way you think of it now
yes and i do think of it that way thanks hazrd24 hence why i mentioned special relativity
This is basically what Mass Effect was all about right here.
i want to punch the schoolteachers that are telling kids that time doesn't exist or is merely a "ruler"
i want to punch the schoolteachers that are telling kids that time doesn't exist or is merely a "ruler"
the teachers dont know better
'Time' seems to exist in a physical sense as it's own entity, such as matter, light, etc. 'Time' as we know it, in hours, minutes and seconds, is simply a measurement. It's been discovered that time is affected by gravity, so in the lower gravity you are, the slower time goes. Or is it quicker... one of those.
This is actually an interesting discussion. So is it possible, if one was to go fast enough, actually reverse himself in time?
the teachers dont know better
true but they should do some research on the subject before telling their students stuff like that
This is actually an interesting discussion. So is it possible, if one was to go fast enough, actually reverse himself in time?
Time reversal is a very heated matter for debate. Going forward in time, however, has been proven, as once Russian astronaut technically is 0.02 seconds younger than when we left earth because of the time/gravity shift.
What about the whole debate on "time" being the fourth dimension? Does FP have any thoughts on this? oh and, despite being a sci-fiction book, I recomend "Singularity" to FP, it's a fairly good read on the theory of black holes/singularities.
not really the concept of time is all in your head
I do smoke mary j, but no I wasn't high when I made this. Also that movie is just a comedy so chill. Also I don't know what the fuck reality is, but I do know Albert Einstein invented it along with the string theory and other scientific shit. I am not trolling but on a serious note explain how we can only go forwards in time but not back. And if you go the speed of light you can go backwards, well why in hell is no one trying to go that fast. But does that mean light is in the past when we see it?
not really the concept of time is all in your head
No. No. No.
