(Reuters) - The first of five U.S. soldiers charged with killing unarmed Afghan civilians last year was sentenced on Wednesday to 24 years in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of premeditated murder.
The guilty plea and sentencing of Army Specialist Jeremy Morlock, 23, of Wasilla, Alaska, marked a key turning point in the most serious prosecution of alleged U.S. military atrocities during 10 years of war in Afghanistan.
German magazine Der Spiegel this week published several photos related to the killings, one showing Morlock crouched grinning over a bloodied corpse as he lifted the dead man's head by the hair for the camera.
The military judge presiding over the case, Lieutenant Colonel Kwasi Hawks, accepted Morlock's plea deal with prosecutors at the end of a daylong proceeding at Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Tacoma, and sentenced Morlock to 24 years in prison.
The judge also ruled Morlock's incarceration would be reduced by nearly a year for time already served since he was charged, and that he would be eligible for parole in about seven years.
Morlock, who also will be dishonorably discharged from the Army, stood silently facing the judge and showed no emotion as his sentence was pronounced.
Earlier in the hearing, he had read a statement apologizing to the victims' families and the "people of Afghanistan," adding, "I lost my moral compass."
Speaking under oath at the proceedings, Morlock also implicated the four other members of his infantry unit's so-called "kill team" and agreed to testify further against them if called as a prosecution witness for their courts-martial.
I also read in another news article from CNN the man stated he knew exactly what he was doing. I posted this to hopefully show it's not like nothing happens to the guys who do dumb shit like this and take photos.. although I think I would've given him longer. I'd definitely need more info but 24 years is still a very long time.
Good to see justice being served.
Wait for the American haters :v:
Good to see that people will still have the opportunity to replicate this situation!
Problem solved.

If they haven't already been killed by friendly fire.

What a name for a murderer.
I don't know what's more fucked up, the murderer or the 24 year sentence.
In before "24 years isn't enough give them life" idiots.

24 is enough. The world will be hugely fucked up or gone by then.

24 years in military prison. Military prison isn't happy.

He could also go for parole in possibly 7 years. Pity shit like this happens. I'm not american, but I'm not even trying to say that this wouldn't also happen in other armies across the world.
For example the Danish peacekeepers in the movie Armadillo took the killing of the taliban fighters quite lightly (although of course thats a whole different deal). Sometimes in a place like that things can just so wrong.
And at times someone crosses the line, like the guy in OP.

Probably why he got 24 years.

This is definitely true. The base I'm at used to be a prison and I've heard lots of stories. One of them stating if you even move out of line they have every right to punch you in the face, and will. And military police are the fat cops that you'd normally see. They're the "I look like I'm on steroids" kind of people.

Military imprisonments follow different rules apparently.
I brought this up in another thread, but regarding military criminals, measures that can be considered inhumane are necessary when dealing with someone formally trained in hand to hand combat and SERE techniques.
Fist pump of justice.
I'd almost feel sorry for him, but that's the kind of justice I like to see served to the likes of him.

Why not? They killed two people and tried to get away with it, one of them was very young. Take the life of two people, and only get 24 years? The only idiot here is you.

You have very little rights in the army.

Think about how fucking long 24 years are.
You have very little rights in Army.
In an origination specially devoted to defending the rights and lives of other people.
That's kinda, well, retarded.
Link to photos?
this story was on the Channel 1 news ( a filtered bias new channel for teens) everyone started booing then i was like "what?" then they all looked at me one of the stupider ones said "he killed terrorists thats what hes supposed to do" sometimes i want to bash my head into a brick wall

Going to admit, getting even five years in jail will flip me out. But these guys murdered two people in cold blood for thrills, then posed with the bodies for shits. They cut short two lives, completely gone now. They deserve nothing less than life.
