Alex Rodriguez was suspended effective Thursday through the 2014 season and 12 other major and minor leaguers for 50 games in the most sweeping sanctions in Major League Baseball's decade-long battle against performance-enhancing drugs -- but the New York Yankees third baseman expects to be in the lineup for tonight's game in Chicago.
The most significant other names on the list announced today by MLB as part of its investigation into the Biogenesis anti-aging clinic include Texas Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta and San Diego Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera. They follow Milwaukee Brewers All-Star Ryan Braun, who agreed to a 65-game suspension two weeks ago.
Taking out a big name player
Why are people upset about this? He used steroids and deserves to be punished for it. Welcome to sports.
Good.
something tells me he's not going to be playing for a while...
something tells me he's not going to be playing for a while...
211 games is roughly a season and a quarter in the MLB, so it's not too long actually.

it's probably the thread title telling you that
but who knows
He knew the risks.

Considering he's planning to appeal the suspension, I'm pretty sure the Yankees have him in their lineup for tonight.

Even if the appeal fails I don't get why the MLB is even trying this again. They did the exact same thing (target one of the league's biggest names) to curb performance enhancers with Canseco like 10 years ago, and I'm pretty sure the abuse continued on as rampant as ever.
the idea isn't to get it to stop entirely, the idea is to A: show the public that they're TRYING, and B: theoretically to show the players that the risk isn't worth it if you get caught.
it's like how the music industry approaches pirating. they can't stop EVERYONE from doing it, so they pick one at random and completely fuck them to teach a lesson to everyone else.

It's the nature of the beast I think. The stricter the league gets with its punishments, the more the MLBPA will combat them. Tossing A-Rod for the rest of this season and the next is a strong punishment, but everybody knows that it's basically the farthest they will go with it.
To an outsider, a 50-65 game suspension sounds great, but it really doesn't do anything. They'll be back next year and things will continue on like normal.

That too is a large part of it, but I think most players are smart enough to recognize that A-Rod is being made an example of, and that the risk if they get caught is significantly lower than what A-Rod is facing. Especially considering the twelve or so other players being suspended are facing less than half of what A-Rod is facing.
Why is his punishment only just over one season? Shouldn't it be longer for effectively cheating?
Why is his punishment only just over one season? Shouldn't it be longer for effectively cheating?
I just saw this on the news and was thinking the exact same thing. If you use drugs in a lot of sports you get banned for life. I assumed this was the rules in most sports to be honest. At least it should be, doping is pretty a low way of cheating.
oh boy a professional athlete on steroids
Why is this even a regulation anymore?
A-Rod should be banned from the sport. He has lied about roids in the past, he'll lie again in the future.

There's a lot more where that came from.

[sp]so do most professional athletes[/sp]
Everybody is on gear in pro baseball. We should just ban baseball.

Oh no, it's only the biggest penalty since the friggin' Black Sox scandal.
