IMO battle pets is a nice addition.

It's an addition to bring new players in, like the panda.
It's can't compete with PvP though.
Its not a bad system, doesnt really affect the game at all, dont even need to do it, its just something small on the side that can let you find rare companions instead of spending like 15k+ gold on one, instead now you can try and find it and catch it.

Yeah, it's something to do whilst queuing for dungeons or something.
