A nurse who went missing after being injected with malaria could only have a day to live unless he receives urgent medical attention, police have said.
Matthew Lloyd, 35, had volunteered to take part in a clinical trial at his home in the Shirley district of Southampton, for which he was injected with the tropical disease.
However, when he failed to turn up for his treatment in Oxford for the second part of the trial, a desperate nationwide appeal for his return was launched.
Hampshire police claim he may have just twenty-four hours left to live if he does not take an anti-malarial drug to cure the disease..
The Southampton General Hospital nurse had phoned in sick to work in the days before the appointment on Thursday, but has not been seen since.
According to police who are tracking Mr Lloyd's movements, his bank cards have been used at cashpoints in London, Milton Keynes and Birmingham. As of yet, there have been no confirmed sightings.
Detective Inspector Becky Riggs from Hampshire Constabulary said today: "We are extremely concerned for Mr Lloyd's wellbeing.
"To put it bluntly, if he has not received medical attention it will be fatal. I urge him in the strongest possible terms to attend a hospital or visit the nearest doctors' surgery.
"He could even get treatment from a pharmacist over the counter, without the need for a prescription.
"Every police officer in the county is looking for him and officers in other counties have also been informed."
Mr Lloyd is described as having short brown hair and is of medium build with a swarthy complexion. Police officers believe that Mr Lloyd has connections with Cornwall and the Avon and Somerset areas.
I can't see him running away because he wanted too... so I guess he was kidnapped?
Scary.
My mind just exploded with all the horrible possibilities of why exactly this person didn't turn up for their next shot.
