PITTSBURGH -- Two people died Thursday in a shooting that also injured seven others -- including a University of Pittsburgh police officer -- at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Oakland.Police said one of those confirmed dead is believed to be the shooter, according to UPMC . He has not been identified yet."This is a tragic day, a sad day, a senseless day, in many ways," Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said at a news conference. He also lauded responding officers and emergency officials for their heroism. LIVE WIRE: Twitter updates on shooting According to UPMC, the gunman entered the building at about 1:40 p.m. Nine people were shot, including the shooter. The wounded were treated at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, just across DeSoto Street from the psych building.SWAT team members entered Western Psych for a floor-by-floor search and to evacuate the building after receiving reports that there may have been a second shooter. UPMC said police now believe there was only one gunman. A witness told Channel 4 Action News he was inside his office on the 11th floor when an alert was issued to employees."I was just sitting in my office, and we heard there was an active bronze alert, which means there's a shooter in the building," he said.He told Channel 4 Action News people inside the building heard the shooting took place in a lobby on the first floor."I'm pretty frightened. I'm shaking right now," he said. "You feel like you have no control over the situation. Your life is in someone else's hands."Anyone still inside has been asked to remain in place until a SWAT team can safely escort them out of the building.Families of the victims have been asked by police to go to the Petersen Events Center, which is located above Western Psych on Terrace Street.A hotline has also been set up for information on patients, belongings left at Western Psych or other concerns at 412-623-7724.The wounded Pitt officer, who was shot just above the left knee, was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
Dee Sapienza, who works on the sixth floor at UPMC Presbyterian, told Action News' Bob Mayo she saw one person being taken out of Western Psych on a stretcher."There were just a ton of police cars, red and blue lights," she said.Sapienza said the hospital was not placed on lockdown, but that she and many others still took precautions."We were not in lockdown at any point that I know of on my floor. Some people just closed their doors, while others stayed in their offices," said Sapienza. The University of Pittsburgh issued this emergency alert to students and faculty after the shooting:
"An active shooter has been identified at Western Psychiatric Institute. Several injured; possible 2nd actor in Western Psych. Lock-down recommended until further notice. If safe to do so, tell others of this message." The university, which is currently in the middle of spring break, lifted the lockdown around 5:30 p.m.Central Catholic and Oakland Catholic high schools, as well as several surrounding businesses and buildings, were placed on lockdown during the ongoing police situation.Police established a staging area near the corner of Bouquet and O'Hara streets. A patient?
The article doesn't say who did it.

Wouldn't security search people for dangerous objects?

It's like pissing on a beehive, I'm surprised a bunch of insane people didn't run around seeking vengeance.
Pittsubrgh? Never heard of the place.

In a live news conference it was said that the shooter walked in with a gun. Not much is known though.
Heard about this not too long ago. A friend saw it happen outside of his window.
My mom screams in her sleep every night and I told my dad to ask his work mates about who to contact for help.
They said call this psyche ward (he hasn't called yet) and now that the place has been shot up I doubt that she would ever come to this place now that its been a shooting gallery. Now we don't have a plan for dealing with her sleep problems.

Also on an unrelated note there was a bomb threat at my old middle school so all the kids there came across the street to the senior high.

There is a main area with 2 elevator as soon as you enter where a guard and a receptionist are at. To the right is a double door security checkpoint that has to be opened by the other side, which is the receiving room for walk-in's . That is the point that they do the pat down and do a hand wand metal check, it's pretty damn percise too trust me. So I don't think this shooter got past the doors into the main recieveing area. If there are a lot of intakes then you have to wait outside the doors to go one at a time through, the process to get in takes about 3-4 mins. If i remember correctly there is another small waiting area down the hall. Im guessing he just walked in and stayed within the main area. Unless somehow he went to the elevators but that's highly improbable without a guard asking what the fuck you were doing.
Real shame that this happened, the psych ward itself is very well staffed and a great service. Whoever did this is quiet an asshole to want to victimize those which have already gone through so much.
Normally i wouldnt say this, but im glad he was killed in the firefight and that the campus PD got there as quickly as they did. University Police have been known to take an eternity at times.
But yeah, fucking shame.

I'm sorry but I can't look at your avatar without thinking of that episode were Fry is put inside a robot psyche hospital...
It's a shame that this kind of thing happened. I'm sure it doesn't help patients much.

Only the biggest steel exporter in the world during the industrial era, and the gateway to the west.
It was a joke. He misspelled it. I know it's an actual city.
