[QUOTE]Former NBA great Charles Barkley called out “unintelligent” black people for criticizing successful black people as “acting white” or not acting black enough.
Barkley’s comments aired during an interview on Philadelphia’s WIP radio this week; Barkley reacted to a report that Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was considered by some teammates as not black enough.
“It’s a dirty dark secret in the black community,” Barkley said, adding later that “we are brainwashed to think if you’re not a thug or an idiot you’re not black enough.”
“There are a lot of black people who are unintelligent, who don’t have success” who believe “it’s best to knock a successful black person down ’cause they’re intelligent, they speak well, they do well in school, and they’re successful,” Barkley added.
Barkley also said that black people will struggle not because of whites but because of all the “crap in your life from other black people.”

Are you trying to say that Charles Barkley is a lawyer?
There's an issue when you find being unsuccessful as a prideful characteristic
Anti-intellectualism is all over the place in American culture, not just black American culture. You find it just about anywhere you find economically disadvantaged, uneducated people. It's not like this is some glaring, unique flaw in black culture. It's as American as pickup trucks and triple cheeseburgers.
Hell, we (whites) have an entire political party that wins elections by pandering to anti-intellectualism. Blacks didn't send a thug to the White House, but we elected a C-student born-again Christian.

I think there's a difference though. It seems to me that in the whilte community the anti-intellectualism stems from intimidation. That is, the less educated whites resent smarter white people because they are afraid of them. They don't resent their success, they understand that with greater education and intelligence comes greater success. They are scared of the power that highly educated people wield. They know the pen is mightier than the sword.
From what I've seen, with blacks it's the opposite. They don't fear more intelligent people, smart people are perceived as physically weak. The resentment comes from envy of their success. The kind of people Barkley is talking about believe in being strong as a path to power. They don't understand that the pen is mightier than the sword. You're doing good because you went to college to play football? They understand that and more importantly feel that is RIGHT. You're doing good because you went to college to study? Who do you think you are?
I believe this can only be changed over time with role models. White or black, if you have someone in your community who improved his or her life through education and smarts, and not because physicality, you will learn the value of education. The more people like that in the community, the better.
Ironically, Barkley is not a good role model for this, since he only succeeded due to being physically gifted.
At least he is able to see the problem, unlike almost all the other successful black people.

While these are valid points, there is also a difference between someone like Charles Barkley and someone like Richard Sherman. Both of them are successful because they are physically gifted but Sherman still plays the part of being a violent thug where as Barkley always acts with dignity and intelligence. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being able to succeed due to being physically gifted. I don't think the issue lies with pulling themselves out of destitute situations through any means, but with the way which they act when they are in the spotlight.

I like how you use Richard Sherman as an example... violent? Hes playing in a sport where you straight up hit other players.. Not only that, but he graduated from high school as a Salutatorian and from there graduated from STANFORD. Why don't you try a different player who is actually a thug like Ray Rice or maybe even Aaron Hernandez? Richard Sherman is far from a violent "thug". He may be a loud mouth but that comes with the game but to call him a violent thug is too far. People look up to him. The dude came out of Compton while excelling in school. But... thats none of my business..

But the point is that Sherman plays the part still. He doesn't act level headed while on camera. People don't see his high school diploma, they hear him yelling on television.
This is important coming from a guy who got fame from sports. People need to know that education has on average a much better future down the line than trying to become famous or trying to get into drug dealing.
Another problem I think is garbage ass rappers like Chief Keef, Juicy J, Rae Srummurd (No flex zone), 2 Chainz, and Tyga (among others). pushing out the message to young impressionable youth that "Success is selling dope, shooting people, having gold chains and diamonds, and having sex with hella bitches". You never hear big rappers (sans Childish Gambino and others) rapping about books and getting your masters and shit and doing your homework.
At the same time they don't see Charles Barkley's scholarly feats either, people only see what the broadcasts want them to see. Richard Sherman himself has told kids to stay in school because if you're not making it out of the hood by sports the only way is through education but people don't know that because the NFL isn't there to educate kids its to get tv ratings so anything that will get them ratings is blown out of proportion. I do understand what you're saying though. Also people don't know but Barkley did spit on fans. None of these players are perfect.
this is a major issue among the black community... the growth of "thugs and poverty" are spanning wider and this anti-intelligence theme been going around. I admire smart black people especially those that step themselves out of the norm and learn proper English and not this gangsta talk, sadly here in louisville, kentucky... these kinds of people are a rare. The only black folks around here are the gangsta type.

Seriously? It's because the academic community is mostly liberal, so many conservatives loosely associate them with that.

People have some really retarded logic when it comes to what a "X person" "Actually is"
for instance, if you asked a complete idiot about race they would reply

it's very funny when X people who are stupid and white trash make fun of Y people for how Y people are all "totally stupid"
especially when said Y person makes huge money and is a doctor/lawyer/cop/etc.
Vice versa as well.
