Experts recorded 100 tremors on El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands, on Tuesday, raising fears of an imminent explosion. At least 50 people were ordered to leave their homes and the army has been called in to prepare for a possible evacuation of the island.
Schools on El Hierro, home to 10,000 people, have been closed and a tunnel linking its two main towns has been shut.
Volcano expert Juan Carlos Carrecedo said: ‘There is a ball of magma rising to the surface producing a series of ruptures which generate seismic activity.
‘We don’t know if that ball of magma will break through the crust and cause an eruption.’
However, he warned that an eruption was possible ‘in days, weeks or months’.
El Hierro is popular with British tourists looking for quiet sunshine holidays away from the bustle of neighbouring islands such as Tenerife and Lanzarote.
Some experts said a volcanic explosion could actually attract tourists to El Hierro.
Eumenio Ancochea, volcanologist at Madrid’s Complutense University, said: ‘An eruption could fill the island with people interested in these phenomena.
‘It’s normal that people are scared but there is no danger.
‘After an eruption the lava advances at a few metres per hour and you can easily take photographs as it descends.’
More than 8,000 tremors have been registered on El Hierro since July 19. Only 15 of them have been strong enough for locals to notice, but on Tuesday an earthquake of 3.8 on the Richter scale was felt all over the island.

Best article I could find, Now for the doomsday version:
[h=5]33 year window of geological catastrophism (1783-1816):We’re back to another period of catastrophism similarly to what occurred on the planet 228 years ago. This period began with the most deadly eruption in modern history- the Laki volcanic fissure eruptions in Iceland. The 1783-1784 eruptions killed an estimated 6 to 7 million people across the globe from its volcanic fallout. Iceland sits over a magma plume. In 1793, El Hierro, which similarly sits over a magma plume, erupted as did the Unsen volcano in Japan which resulted in an landslide and tsunami which killed 15,000 people. 23 years later, Tambora erupted in Indonesia and killed 92,000. Clearly, these periods of hyper-volcanism means volcanoes can be stirred across the planet in concert with earthquakes. Large destructive earthquakes accompanied the volcanism during this turbulent 33 year period. The 1797 Riobamba 8.3 earthquake in Ecuador killed 41,000. A 8.4 earthquakes struck Sumatra, Indonesia the same year. In 1802, a 7.9magnitude earthquake struck Romania, and in 1810, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Crete and killed 2000 people. Between 1811-1812, a 8.1, 7.8, and a 8.0 magnitude earthquake all struck the New Madrid fault zone in the U.S. and in 1812, Santa Barbara and Wrightwood, California were both hit by 7.0magnitude earthquakes. –The Extinction Protocol
[/h]And then:
The Extinction Protocol says:September 28, 2011 at 11:16 pm
I think we are back in another period of geological catastrophism and this one may be the worst of the events if it is indeed the ending period foretold by all the world’s prophecies. The problem is when these events all began unwinding in earnest, they will began overlapping or cascading into a global planetary crisis event so it could be hard to rationalize what is exactly happening to the world in such a climate of chaos. That the magma plumes, Iceland, El Hierro, Hawaii Kilauea, Etna, and S. Java all seem to be acting up at the same time, in this time period, is a grave cause for concern.
peace and blessings,

Oh, did I mention the already appearing youtube spam-comments?
ALERT!!!!! THE EL HIERRO VOLCANO IN THE CANARY ISLANDS IS ABOUT TO ERUPT...OVER 9000 EARTHQUAKES WERE RECORDED ON THE ISLAND SINCE JULY* 2011..ON OCTOBER 04, 2001 (YESTERDAY) VOLCANOLOGISTS HAVE REPORTED THE STEADY UPWARD MOVEMENT OF MAGMA FROM 14 KILOMETERS BELOW.SCIENTISTS REPORT THAT WHEN THE ERUPTION HAPPENS, HALF OF THE MOUNTAIN MATERIAL WILL BREAK OFF AND FALL INTO ATLANTIC OCEAN CREATING A 300 FOOT TSUNAMI THAT WILL REACH THE EAST COAST OF THE WESTERN WORLD IN 6 HOURS...PREPARE YOURSELVES
[h=5]Oh boy here we go again... :v:[/h]
By the way is this the right section for this?
TL;DR version: El Hierro could erupt, doomsayers stir fear, this is normal, life goes on.
Excuse me while I don't shit myself.
Volcanoes are awesome. I love seeing pictures of their eruptions.
Imagine this only bigger.

We must sacrifice some virgins.
So. Who on FP will volunteer for the altar.

What in the name of fuck is that? It looks like an explosion mixed with lightning and beauty.

I think the name's Photoshop... Or Paint.NET if you prefer.

No. That's a real picture of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption if I remember correctly.

In that case :science:
It was actually of the Chilean Volcano. at least I'm pretty sure it is after all I googled for that specifically.
I know there's a lot of fear mongering surrounding the possible eruption, but it's terrifying to think that it might actually happen. If the mountain does collapse, it may not be as bad as said, but it's definitely not going to be good.

yeah, bad, but not " 300 FOOT TSUNAMI THAT WILL REACH THE EAST COAST OF THE WESTERN WORLD IN 6 HOURS" bad.
Seriously where did 300 FOOT TSUNAMI come from?!

If I remember correctly, it was a History Channel "documentary".
Naturally.

I believe I saw that, it claimed a landslide would cause a "mega-tsunami" that would wipe out the entire east coast.

I think we're done here.
damn my brother is at Tenerife (honeymoon)
We're all going to die
Humanity just can't be happy without having the end of the world to look forward to, people just love talking about mass death.
It's not even the kind of volcano that produces super eruptions.
