Today we are announcing plans to shut down the Ubuntu One file services. This is a tough decision, particularly when our users rely so heavily on the functionality that Ubuntu One provides. However, like any company, we want to focus our efforts on our most important strategic initiatives and ensure we are not spread too thin.
Our strategic priority for Ubuntu is making the best converged operating system for phones, tablets, desktops and more. In fact, our user experience, developer tools for apps and scopes, and commercial relationships have been constructed specifically to highlight third party content and services (as opposed to our own); this is one of our many differentiators from our competitors. Additionally, the free storage wars aren't a sustainable place for us to be, particularly with other services now regularly offering 25GB-50GB free storage. If we offer a service, we want it to compete on a global scale, and for Ubuntu One to continue to do that would require more investment than we are willing to make. We choose instead to invest in making the absolute best, open platform and to highlight the best of our partners' services and content.
I'm not sure how many people actually use Ubuntu One, but when I did, I found it a very useful tool for syncing files from my PC to my laptop.
Not surprising, a lot of cloud storage places offer Debian desktop clients AND better storage overall
I've never used it and I've never heard of anyone ever using it. But I did know it existed.
Ubuntu had a cloud filehost?
Ubuntu had a cloud filehost?
not anymore
i thought ubuntu one was just for music
huh
I stopped using hosted services for everything that's not public.
If I just want to sync between my phone, laptop and PC they can connect directly and with proper client-side encryption.
It was very nice and they offered 5GB compared to Dropbox's 2GB for a free plan. If anyone who reads this used U1, there is Copy.com. Good Linux client and they give you 15GB for signing up plus 5GB per invitation.
How many people actually use Ubuntu now? The last time I checked, their user share was dropping like a stone thanks to Unity.

That's pretty much the reason I switched to Linux mint, though right now I'm not due to Linux in general being buggy with GMod.

It's the most popular desktop distro in the world.

Mint is.
So THAT'S what that was.
I hate everything about this stupid OS and I'm only forced to use it because I can't find my recovery disks for windows and of /course/ one of the few features I'm actually somehow able to figure out how to use is going to be gotten rid of.
