A man has been arrested in southeastern Brazil for allegedly keeping his wife locked in a cellar for 16 years.
Police acting on a tip-off found the 64-year-old woman padlocked in a moldy, filth-ridden cellar.
She was discovered lying naked on a concrete bed in the 12 square meter (130 square foot) room, with only a blanket to cover her, and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Joao Batista Groppo, the woman's husband of 40 years, told police that he kept her locked away because she was mentally ill.
The 64-year-old suspect reportedly told officers he did not provide her with any form of lighting to avoid wasting energy.
During the woman's alleged imprisonment, Groppo shared the house in Sorocaba, about 60 miles (97 km) west of Sao Paulo, with his girlfriend Maria Aparecida Furquim, the paper said.
She was arrested Wednesday as an alleged accomplice.
The couple was charged with false imprisonment, authorities said. They could each face eight years in prison if convicted.
In another news thread i say, Wow what the fuck
8, full years?!?
Talk about determination
So locking someone naked in a filthy cellar without light for 16 years gives you 8 years maximum in a normal prison, if you are unlucky?
isn't this old news?
I'm very sure i have seen this mans face in here before...

To make you feel better, there's probably over a thousand people suffering the same fate right now.

Fate of being locked for most of their life? That doesn't make me feel better at all.

That's Josef Fritzl, a man from Austria who held a woman captive for 24 years. The picture was posted as a reference, because the OP felt the cases were similar.
He was charged with incest, rape, coercion, false imprisonment, enslavement and the negligent homicide of the infant Michael.
Such is life in Brazil.

At least he did his part to save the environment
Let him have 16 years in a prison cell, and it will almost be the same.

yeh but there were two of them and 2 goes into 16 8 times :downs:
She should've made the goddamn sandwich.
He should do at least 16 years.
I've heard rumors about how in South American prisons, the guards don't confiscate weapons because that's how they deal with overcrowding :ohdear:
Remind me of that poor girl named Genie. She, as a child, was locked in a basement without any sort of light. She grew into a feral child.
:saddowns:
i guess she stayed in da kitchen were women r supposed to be!! lol!!!
you don't wanna stay 8 years in a brazil prison
Brazil has very light prison terms in regards to anyone going to prison at all. If you are on good behavior your sentence might get halved.
