• Having trouble waking up at normal time

Sounds ridiculous I know but I've read countless guides online and they all prove useless. All these guides say is "make sure to wake up at the same time every day" - which is my problem, I just cannot wake up until between 2-3pm. Even if I go to bed at 11pm or 12 Midnight, I will sleep for 13+ hours. It seems that no matter what wakes me up, I will react semi consciously: If an alarm goes off, I will switch it off, even if it is on the other side of the room and I will have little to no recollection. My flatmate often comes in and tries to talk to me, even then I will react in a semi-conscious state. Hell he claims to have shaken me one day and I just rolled over. I have a radio turn on rather loudly at 10am and I also have alarms on my phone starting at 10:30, the radio doesn't often wake me, instead it just influences my dreams. If I switch it to a loud alarm noise, I simply switch it off. With my phone, alarms will go off for hours with no effect on me - I either sleep through them or switch them off without even realising. I'm certain this has been caused by getting only 4 hours sleep most days of the week for just over a month due to coursework and then getting only 2 hours sleep most days last week before the final hand in. I really need to fix this, I was supposed to be getting more coursework done this week but I've been sleeping in until ridiculous times and getting some nasty side effects such as nausea and headaches thus preventing me from working at any useful pace.
I know it sucks but you need to get on a routine, sleep at like 11pm. If you can't, stay up all night until you can and then never break it. If you break it you will lose the ability to go to sleep at 11pm. Do it for a few weeks and you will build up some resistance to deviances.
Most of the time, If I attempt an early night, I just lay awake for hours. I had the same problem last year and fixed in somewhat by staying up for 24 hours and then sleeping at 10pm. Is this really advisable as a fix though?
Do you lay in your bed with all the lights off and eyes closed though? I used to say that a lot as well but it was because i had my phone or my laptop making light and doing things rather than actually just trying to sleep.

Both things have the same outcome. Even if I lay there in silence, eyes closed, lights off I can still lay awake for 3 hours, mind racing. If I have trouble getting to sleep I often just find a long ass Scott Manley video to watch because his voice is rather quiet and smooth and it gives my mind something to focus on rather than trying to focus on 5 different things at once. [editline]18th December 2014[/editline] [QUOTE=reevezy67;46742199]It's the only way, you have to force a routine to fix your body clock.[/QUOTE] How can I force a routine if I simply cannot wake up at a scheduled time though? That's the big problem here, you've just gone and used the advice I said simply didn't apply to me. I also have an issue of feeling tired throughout the day, I have never woken up feeling refreshed. This has been a problem for years, even my doctor didnt know what it was. I had tried getting lots of sleep, the average amount of sleep and less than average and that didn't help. That was over a year ago though. But this problem of being stuck in a shitty sleeping pattern is back. One thing that is really strange though, is that if I had Uni in the morning, I could make it no bother, even if I had 1 hour sleep. As soon as a day off or the weekend came though, I'd enter this state of sleeping through everything. I even woke up to the police knocking on my door asking if I had heard any disturbances - considering I can hear most of what goes on in the flat downstairs, I'd imagine something that attracted police attention must have been loud.
You need to tire your body as well as your mind, get a gym routine going. Try having a spoken word podcast playing next to you bed so your mind is distraced but you're still laying in the dark with your eyes closed. Sounds like the main problem is you're just sleeping late, so waking up late, and it's a constant cycle. It takes about week of waking up and going to bed at the right times to get a proper cycle going, just like jet-lag. Going to bed at the right time once isn't an instant fix.
Smooth music or try some breathing exerscises to help you get to sleep (lots available on the web, helps you relax and chill out to sleep, i have anxiety issues that tend to pop up in the times before sleep, since your mind can just wander) Your tired because you are getting too much sleep, oversleep can leave you just as tired as too little sleep. Have you tried any of those alarm clocks that launch across the room or roll away? They make you get up and do something active instead of just turning them off? Honestly im a little concerned your getting headaches and nausea as well since ive had times i slept 14 hours in a day multiple days (go back to sleep cause i couldnt be bothered to get up) but ive never had any ill effects from that other than being tired from oversleeping... have you talked to a doctor recently and mentioned that as well?
To be honest, there's not enough information here to diagnose a sleeping problem other than "force a sleeping pattern" (we're not doctors, could be anything).
stay up all night, go to bed at like 7pm the next day and set like 10 alarms for 10am [editline]19th December 2014[/editline] as in all nighter
A gym, routine is not an option because I can't afford it. I live in a city so I often walked a good 3 miles a day, as well as running for trains. I may not be this week but the problem was here earlier. I've looked into those alarm clocks but I'm having trouble parting with money at the moment seen as I've been in my overdraft for 3 months now. As for the too much sleep, I already covered that as I've told even my doctors that I've tried getting different amounts of sleep over the course of 6 months and to no avail. Reached the conclusion that I'm stuck with it forever, it has literally been a problem for a good 5-6 years. The plan was to just play Halo through til saturday morning and then we get picked up. I did do this last year and it worked. It's just a horrible process to endure. Most nights I can get to sleep relatively quickly, the problem is the opposite of insomnia at the moment. I know you're not doctors but I often come to Facepunch as a last resort as I always seem to get a good response on any sort of question.
Is it a case of you can't get up or you don't want to get up (eg depression)? You need to force yourself to wake up at the right time for at least a week.
Force yourself awake. I know it sucks from first hand, im a 13+ hour sleeper as well. Have a coffee maker with a timer, so that it starts making coffee when its morning, MULTIPLE alarm clocks at different times around the room, agressive & annoying alarm sounds. If you're crafty, you could even make an airsoft gun that shoots at you if you dont get up or something. After a while, you'll get used to it and you'll start waking up automatically. [editline]18th December 2014[/editline] Also, go to bed at 11 every night.

When I woke up at 3 today I actually lashed out and punched a wall out of frustration. I had a similar problem last year and even placing alarms on the other side of the room still didn't wake me up. I'd get up and switch it off but I'd have little to no recollection of it. [editline]18th December 2014[/editline] [QUOTE=Str4fe;46742407]Force yourself awake. My family can't help either because I tend to help them out more than they help me money wise. My alarm clock is extremely aggressive, I stayed in student halls last year and it would often wake everyone up but not me. Sometimes I'd have folk banging on my door to switch it off, hell I even had someone from upstairs banging on their floor.
If you can consistently wake up at 3pm then you could just as easily consistently wake up at any other time.

[QUOTE=Roll_Program;46742527]If you can consistently wake up at 3pm then you could just as easily consistently wake up at any other time.[/QUOTE] I know that but my problem lies in fixing it which is proving difficult because I seem to only reach full consciousness any time between 2pm and 3pm

Because cortisol is what actually wakes you up in the morning, so if you're very stressed throughout the day it fucks with your cortisol levels and therefore also with your sleep.

Well at least I know now. Time to eat fuck tonnes of bananas.
It could be all that Iron Maiden you're listening to :v: I too would not be able to sleep if I were feeling scared, fell to my knees, and something rushed me from the trees, took me to an unholy place, where I would fall from grace.
[QUOTE=Wickerman123;46743931]Really? Well at least I know now. Time to eat fuck tonnes of bananas.[/QUOTE] Yeah really. I'm not sure about the bananas but high cortisol levels causes a fuckton of illnesses and reducing your stress should be your primary goal. It's strange that your doctor didn't think of this so maybe you should also think about looking for a better one.

I usually listen to house more than anything. That or acoustic stuff.

but finals week lol
Stop masturbating, if it doesn't work try fasting for 1-2 days.

[QUOTE=minge-killer;46753096]I used to use an app like this, doesn't work great though because you can just turn your phone off[/QUOTE] Fucking exactly. Worked great until my barely conscious self figured out he could just hold a button down and tap something rather than doing math. I also consistently wake up at 3pm-ish and can't stop. Even if I go to bed at 11pm I still sleep until 1pm. I've tried all sorts of different alarms but when it comes down to it I just turn it off and go back to bed. Or unplug it. Or worse. And I also lay awake in my bed if I try to go to bed too early. The only things that work even minorly to get me to bed is if I take melatonin and some type of cold medicine or sleeping pills. but even then I end up sleeping ever longer as a result.
I can agree to this 100%!
Stress, anxiety, pent up guilt from something you know you did wrong, etc. are the reasons most people I know have for trouble getting to sleep/staying on a sleep schedule. If something has been on your mind I suggest facing it head on and doing everything in your power to resolve the problem. I know it's a lot easier said than done, but you have to really, truly, believe that there's nothing else you can do (assuming there really isn't), and that worrying about it isn't going to help the situation. Practice makes perfect, even when it comes to mental issues like getting rid of anxiety. If none of this rings any bells, then ignore me completely. [editline]20th December 2014[/editline] Another random thought: make sure you're staying hydrated! I know that I feel extremely tired even after a good night's sleep when I don't drink enough water.
