French rescue workers pulled a 24-year-old man alive from the rubble of a hotel in Haiti on Saturday, 11 days after an earthquake devastated much of the country.
Wismond Jean-Pierre, who had no visible injuries but was severely dehydrated, was immediately loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Lt. Col. Christophe Renou, a rescuer with the French team, called the three-hour effort "a miracle" as he was briefly overcome with emotion. Other members of the team -- assisted by American and Greek workers -- were seen weeping with joy following the rescue.
"This is God," Frank Louvier, the chief of the French rescue team, said as he pointed to the sky.

The man's brothers said they reported hearing tapping from within the ruins of the Hotel Napoli Inn for several days but struggled to get authorities to the scene. A Greek journalist said he alerted Greek rescue workers after hearing the tapping for himself
________
His brother said Jean-Pierre was a clerk at a store in the hotel. He said Jean-Pierre searched in the dark and found a soda, taking little sips at a time during the 11 days he was trapped..
That would've sucked if a cloud of bees smelled the soda and flew into the hole he was stuck in.
wait what? shouldn't the soda dehydrate him?
wait what? shouldn't the soda hydrate him?
That's my thought.
That's my thought.
C02 Emission methods used in the current soda production procedure actually counteracts the oxygen contained inside the water, effectively making it "Dull Water".
you can't live off soda for 11 days without becoming dehydrated. there's a lot less water in it than one might think. also, a lot of liquid comes from food you eat, especially fruits and vegetables
That is amazing. Eleven whole days just laying there and hoping would make me go out of my mind.
Well wouldn't soda have sugars and stuff that you can use

Big deal. People in the US just lie there and drink soda all the time!

Good point. Fuck that, I was even gonna donate to the appeal.
Betcha it was Dr. Pepper.
Big deal. People in the US just lie there and drink soda all the time!
And in the UK, they would just drink their tea.
Wow, that guy is lucky, one soda, that's crazy.
I find it hard going a day without food, and most definitely drinks, but 11 days with one can.
I'm guessing if it went flat it might be slightly "healthier", though I honestly have no clue.
Now I see why Whitaker wanted cola..
obligatory:
What a fucking badass

I'd tell that guy "So Frenchie, God clearly wanted this guy buried with a soda. And you guys go and dig him out. What's up with that? Expect a lightning bolt anytime now."
wait what? shouldn't the soda dehydrate him?
No.
The myth of soda dehydration comes from when scientists found that caffeine was a diuretic (a diuretic is a drug that increases urine output). However when they actually researched its true effects they found it to be little more powerful then water. Sugar does not cause dehydration, complete and total myth
Its also the same with coffee. Moderate intake of caffeine consumption won’t dehydrate you and can actually help you reach your overall daily fluid intake.
The reason why he was dehydrated was because he was rationing that one soda can to last him 11 days.
Fuck, I read the title as "Man survives 11 days trapped in rubble, off of sofa."
I thought:
A) Why the fuck would it matter if he was off of his sofa or not, was he a couch potato?
B) Wow it must be tough digesting that shit.
But I got it now, props to the guy for staying alive.

It's mostly water, actually. Carbonated water is still water.

Soda doesn't dehydrate you, caffeine does. That and 11 days with only one bottle.
For all of you who don't know...
Soda is flavored carbonated water.... I'm glad I could help educate you today.

the sugary content of soda takes a toll on how well you're hydrated. but i guess you're right, i stand corrected.
And in the UK, they would just drink their tea.
We get bad teeth, america gets obesity.
I'm prefering the outcome here.
Betcha it was Dr. Pepper.
The man would have died from bad taste in the first day.

But I'd rather take my risks and drink soda rather than drink nothing for 11 days.
ITT, people argue whether or not soda hydrates you...
