Breaking as of now:

Federal Parliament has voted yes to same-sex marriage. It passed with a clear majority and will become law in days after it goes to the Governor-General.

The GG isn't going to refuse. Kind of pointless to put it in the title.

well it's not law until he signs it so it is appropriate
There's really no point in saying that it needs the Governor's-General approval - he's not going to say no.

No, because the title implies that he has a practical veto. Which he doesn't.
GG has the right to veto if he wants to, I don't want him to at all but he does have that power
Things like this make me miss Flagdog. I had no idea looking at the title, or the body, where this was until I checked the URL.
Either way this is nice.

De facto, sure, but de jure it would quickly lead to Australia becoming a republic.
Probably one of the few good things the current goverment has done and you know they're going to dangle it around next election for brownie points dispite how much they dragged thier heels to do it.
I'm happy it's pretty much passed now though.

They did, but you know what? We deserve at least a day where everyone can sit back and say you know what, no matter who did it, its fucking done. Its actually just done. This has been going on for almost 15 years. I am so relieved and so so happy that we were finally up to the task.
The gallery was singing "I am Australian" in parliament and the pollies went quiet and joined in.. was really awesome.
To nobody's surprise that married couple that said they'd divorce if SSM goes through have backpedaled

I don't know if Australia has the same relationship with the Crown as we do, but here in Canada, if the Governor-General refused to sign the gay marriage bill that Canada passed in 2005, there would've been a constitutional crisis and we'd probably have spent the last 12 years undergoing constitutional reform to kick the monarchy out and the Prime Minister would be akin to a President now.
Maybe things are different in Australia and I'll cop to having a fairly vague and uninformed view of the exact conditions of your parliament's modern dynamic with the GG, but if this was Canada the headline would be more like "gay marriage bill passed except for bureaucratic formalities, start the party now".
Cosgrove has signed it into law.
First marriages start from January 9th, 2018.

Why you all need to shit on it for being late?
Can't we just be happy it passed without any shit amendments etc?
Congratulations, Australia! <3
