A Chinese fighter came perilously close to a US military patrol plane over international waters east of China's Hainan Island, the Pentagon has said.Spokesman John Kirby said that the US had protested to the Chinese military over the mid-air intercept, calling the fighter pilot's actions "unsafe and unprofessional".
He said that the Chinese aircraft came within 10 metres of the US Navy plane.
Correspondents say that it is the fourth such incident since March.
So far there has been no comment about the reported near-miss from China.
Rear Admiral Kirby said that the incident happened on Tuesday when an armed Chinese Su-27 fighter intercepted a US Navy P-8 Poseidon patrol aircraft that was on a routine mission.
"We have registered our strong concerns to the Chinese about the unsafe and unprofessional intercept, which posed a risk to the safety and the well-being of the air crew, and was inconsistent with customary international law," he said.
He said that the Chinese manoeuvre detracted from efforts to improve American relations with China's military.
The warplane flew close to the surveillance aircraft three times, he said, flying above, underneath and alongside it. At one point it performed "a barrel roll" in an apparent display of its weapons.
Rear Adm Kirby said that the Chinese manoeuvre was "very, very close, very dangerous".
Near-misses between aircraft and naval vessels of the US and China are commonplace off the coast of China.
In December China said one of its warships "encountered" a US guided missile cruiser, confirming US reports of a near-collision in the South China Sea.
Shortly before this incident China set up an Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea, and said that aircraft flying through the zone must follow its rules, including filing flight plans.

dumb motherfuckers
keep flexing china, its about the only thing you can do.
china is like the kid in the school yard of international politics who thinks he is tough shit and for that fact goes around trying to act tough and goes around and tries to bully people.
Just imagine the result of it hitting the other plane instead of barely missing it.

Way to flip the story, America. You were flying far too close to the Chinese.
The pilot should have made this gesture:

The pilot in this incident was actually under the command of the same wing commander in the Hainan Island incident, he's either going to get fired, killed, or promoted.

Please do a quick google search of "worlds 2nd largest GDP" thnx
Oh also while you're at it "worlds largest military" is a good search too.
God the Su-27 is such a pretty air frame.
An accident could so easily have happened, what a fucking mindless retard.
If the American military doesn't like the Chinese flying so close to them, maybe they should move their military planes the fuck away from the airspace that's right next to China's airspace?
Next thing they'll do is casually fly a nuclear missile near Russia's airspace.

worlds largest military doesnt mean much. this giant military doesnt even have much experience.
for instance if a country had a tank force consisting of T-34's and a bunch of conscripts and aircraft that went obsolete 40+ years ago, thats not much of a force against a technological powerhouse. also if it got into any violent confrontation with american forces thatd absolutely kill both china and america. on another note, i dont think china could stomach a war with the US or any major allies.
Lol this article is such bullshit. 30 feet isn't even that close.
Relative speed is everything. When both planes are flying at the same speed, one plane could fly a few feet from the other and be perfectly safe, because relative to each-other they're moving at a rate of a few feet per second, if not less.
The blue angels fly at a distance of <1 meter apart, and those are both super agile fighter jets. According to the article the US sub-hunter plane was something resembling a C-130, which is basically incapable of making any drastic movements. What the Chinese fighter jet did was hardly dangerous.

T-34's? And China doesn't utilize conscription.

To give you an idea of how easy it is to fly close-proximity, skip to 2:30. (Loud)
At 3:05 the pilot could have literally touched the other plane with his hand, had his windshield not been in the way.
Lol this article is such bullshit. 30 feet isn't even that close.
Anyone who's ever played a game that had airplanes in it knows that relative speed is everything. 30 feet is waaaaay too close for planes. Blue Angels are expert aerobatic pilots that train for years. Some Chinese pilot thinking he's Tom Cruise by flying around what is essentially a 737 is increadibly wreakless.

Yeah and blue angels also do ridiculous acrobatic stunts at <1000ft. A 737 flies in a straight line for 500 miles and doesn't make any sudden moves.

didnt state china at all nor did i imply numbers via conscription.
also if you actually didnt know this, some militaries still utilize it for some reason.

Do you have any clue how much more training and experience those pilots have than an average Chinese fighter pilot? Are you aware the F-18s that the Blue Angels use are modified to be easier to control in close proximity by expert aerobatic pilots that verbally go through an entire planned out performance before each flight?
[editline]23rd August 2014[/editline]
There is nothing easy about close proximity flying. One mistake could close a 30 foot gap in a matter of seconds. Not to mention the Chinese pilot was doing rolls over the plane and flying in front of the plane with its belly showing.

Dude flying within 30 feet of an airplane without hitting it is not hard. When you pass a car on the freeway you're within 3 feet of the car next to you but I don't see you complaining. Especially when you could be getting passed by a 16 year old that just got their license. These fighter pilots have likely been flying planes longer than that 16 year old has been alive.

Exactly. A matter of seconds. These fighter pilots are trained to have good reflexes. A matter of seconds is plenty of time to perform an appropriate reaction. When you're driving your car, everything happens in a matter of seconds too. When you're on the highway and the car in front of you brakes, "A matter of seconds" is the difference between a collision and no collision. Hundreds of millions of people perform this incredibly simple task every day. And now consider that these fighter pilots have significantly more training than the average layman.

I know, I get that you weren't mentioning China specifically. But to compare China to "conscripts and T-34s" is still ridiculous.

I could have said anyone who's played a multiplayer flight sim but I didn't think that appeals to as broad of an audience.
Lol this article is such bullshit. 30 feet isn't even that close.
Anyone who's ever played a game that had airplanes in it (I only say that because multiplayer flight sims are hard to come by) knows that relative speed is everything. When both planes are flying at the same speed, one plane could fly a few feet from the other and be perfectly safe, because relative to each-other they're moving at a rate of a few feet per second, if not less.

Are you a pilot or something or are you talking out of your ass? You're using video game experience as a reference, and then you go on to cite acrobat fliers as a standard.

Next time you're on the freeway, cut off a semi truck perpendicular to its front, 3 feet away and tell me how that goes. Totally not wreakless at all!
