why did you come in to this thread if you know you don't like the show
why did you come in to this thread if you know you don't like the show
I've never heard of this show before, so I came into this thread out of curiosity. My bad, I must have missed the part where I said, "I don't like this show."
I didn't say I'd seen it and dislike it, I said all the shows tend to look the same anymore.

To be completely honest, Steven Universe looks nothing like the other shows on CN. It's very far beyond the way the other shows are

okay that's going a bit far. like i love the show too but it totally apes adventure time's art style.
I really wanted to like Steven universe, but it's just so boring, nothing really happens for most of the episodes, and then they have like that episode about his mom's video tape and that's the saving grace and I still really want to like it but...again boring.
To me Steven Universe is the first show in a good while that is the full package on CN.
It has a nice story, nice art style, nice comedy, nice characters, etc.
I honestly love Steven Universe just as much as old shows from my childhood like Samurai Jack and Ed Edd n Eddy, very few shows accomplished this for me lately.

I'll admit, I've seen a few episodes of Regular Show and chuckled, but I can't stand Adventure Time or Gumball.
Not knocking Steven Universe, because I was completely unaware of its existence until today, just saying look at those pictures... there are definitely similarities.
Those look nothing alike
Is it just me, or does every show on Cartoon Network (omit [adultswim]) just look exactly the same anymore...
I'm not really sure what you mean by that. If you mean cartoons don't have radically different styles like, say, Ed, Edd n Eddy vs. Samurai Jack vs. Adventure Time then...sure?
But on the other hand, and I'm not an artist by any means so I can't speak too much about this, I'm pretty sure that it's a huge oversimplification to say "well they all just look the same nowadays". Sure there's similarities, but I still think that's kinda a weird statement.
Those look nothing alike
There are differences but they do look really similar. I'm not sure how you can say they look nothing alike.
I feel the similarities in design is due to how all the show developers have pretty much started out on one series and then moved on too making their own original one. This aspect of designing generates similar designs for the shows. Although the actually content for each show differs quite a bit in my opinion.

The outlining is somewhat similar, but besides that the way the characters move for example have more characteristics in each show.
There's definitely no denying CN had more unique art styles back then though.
Steven Universe is a love hate relationship for me. It has nice art, and a nice story and world, but I can't stand Steven or some of the other characters at all.
Also the main differences between the CN shows are the backdrops. Most shows look the same because those kinds of shapes are easy to animate. And since they're now doing shows in 10 minute increments easier > better.
They look similar on the principle of simple character art and large white eyes with dots for irises, and even Adventure Time eschews that besides certain characters. Not to mention that in practice, the art style has shifted a small bit for Gumball with later episodes and the entire series takes place in CGI backgrounds, Adventure Time loves its more simplistic style and makes full use of it, Regular Show does whatever the fuck it wants with a somewhat standard style, and Steven Universe tends to go for abstract background with beautiful detail.
The shows look nothing alike to me besides perhaps some matters of animation for Regular Show and Adventure Time.
The pilot for steven universe did have a unique design to it.

I watched when this show first premiered over a year ago, and I thought it looked like a nice show. The catchy songs are a huge plus for it too. But for the past few months this show exploded out of nowhere. My friend has been watching this show like its a religion for the past couple months and he's been pushing me to watch it more thoroughly.

ughh I hate the pilot designs, they're so ugly and make Steven look like the dumb fat kid

The story blew up and got deep as fuck, it's not just your typical "every episode is its own story" show anymore.
In defense of the similar art syles and to keep this thread from becoming another, "blargh this generation's cartoons are so bland" discussion on the internet, cartoons have always had similar art styles to an extent. I think it has to do with it either of being from the same artist or another artist drawing inspiration from a colleague working at the station. I also think that it just has to do with a company developing, or growing more accustomed to a certain style in their cartoons. Kind of like how Disney has their own established, "Disney" art style, Nickelodian and Cartoon Network have a particular style they are keen to.

basically for a little bit it was just monster of the week plus little kid shenanigans but at the end of the last season, Vegeta and Nappa showed up, we learn that the crystal gems are actually a really small group of rebels from a species that's essentially the Decepticons meets the Saiyans, and an actual overarching story started happening
the show's budget also got a big bump and the animation quality went from "eh, whatever" to "hey, this is pretty good for an American TV cartoon"
That vídeo was raaaaaad! The animation was butter smooth

A lot of people jumped on the SU bandwagon around the middle and end of season 1 when some major plot points happened. In addition it's become a serialized cartoon, so each episode effects the next and a lot of people (including myself) get hooked wanting to see what happens next. Also it's just damn well made, plus you have the whole shipping lesbain space rocks thing that some people love.

But Steven is a dumb fat kid
I like the show and all, but the songs really don't hold their own without context. I feel like they break into song too often in the show.

They started doing what they call "stevenbombs," which is a CN tactic of releasing one episode every day of the week. Because of this, more info started to show up everywhere and people started really getting into it. Personally, I like it, even it it can be a bit slow.
A binged watched all the episodes in a few days, it's a really good show

I'd agree with you about Adventure Time and Regular Show but that's it. Especially with those weird 3D backgrounds in Gumball.

I'd agree with you much like how Windows, Mac, and Linux look alike. The cartoons' style and animation is a balance between what looks good and animates easily with the current technology. They all want to look good and animate easily so they all become very similar. Kinda like an evolution of animation.
However just like operating systems, they're composed of a lot more than just their looks. And I'm pretty sure that's why there's a bunch of people lashing out at you.
[sp]STOP GENERALIZING MY SHOW[/sp]
Steven universe is a show I do watch, but ingore the fandom because of how it devolved so fast after the first season
