India's Maharashtra state bans beef
The Indian president has approved a bill which bans the slaughter of cows and the sale and consumption of beef in the western state of Maharashtra.
Anyone found breaking the law will face a fine and up to five years in prison.
Hindus, who comprise 80% of India's 1.2bn population, revere cows and the sale and consumption of beef is banned or restricted in many states.
Correspondents say most beef sold in India is actually from water buffaloes which are not considered sacred at all.
The Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Bill took 19 years to become law - it was first passed by the state's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiv Sena government in 1995 and was sent to the president for approval in January 1996.
The BJP, which returned to power in the state last year, once again made a push for its approval and, reports say, a group of BJP MPs from the state met President Pranab Mukherjee last week to seek his approval for the bill.

..Critics of the bill say their owners, mostly farmers, could now be stuck feeding them for years until they die of natural causes.

From the FT article:
"India’s consumption of bovine meat — including both beef and buffalo — has fallen over the past decade, as rightwing Hindu groups have campaigned to discourage lower-caste Hindus from eating it. But exports are surging, and are now estimated at about $5bn a year."

uhh... isn't this blatant discrimination?
LEGALIZE BEEF
Living here in Nebraska with a 160 head herd of cattle, this is stupid...

To be fair, the caste system itself is blatant discrimination.

I thought lower-caste/"feet of the God" was only in history books in India.
Could have sworn I read about this district in particular banning beef and only allowing a vegetarian diet quite a few months back, if not a year or two.
Still, kinda silly, as long as the animal is put down in a quick and humanely manner.
What is their beef with beef?
More beef for me

In the religion of Hinduism, the animal called a "cow" is thought to be sacred, or very holy. Most Hindus respect the cow for her gentle nature which represents the main teaching of Hinduism, non-injury (ahimsa). The cow also represents ghee and strength .

Does that include bulls?
Does that include bulls?
Technically, no, it's primarily applicable to cows. There is religious sanction for the use of the flesh of a bull or its skin (to make into leather) if it happens to die of natural causes, same goes for cows, but killing an ox or a cow (especially a cow) is a one way ticket to hell. But then our religion also says that if you happen to sell cows, ginger, betel leaves, and a few other things I dont remember, you'll also go to hell, same goes for if you drink milk without offering it to God first.
I've always wondered if that applied to ice cream as well, if it does I'm probably fucked, so see you in hell I suppose.

This probably won't last. Bombay's easily the most populous area in India, as well as being the one with the most international investment and the most cosmopolitan views. Add to that the fact that there are still a LOT of livestock farmers who depend on the domestic sale of beef, and I'm going to guess there'll be a riot or two, after which the government will backpedal at lightspeed, like always.

India is a secular democracy. The people have rioted in the past in protest of theocratic shit, and they'll do so again. Wait and see.
I never understand who in India actually holds the cows as sacred. I know it sure as hell a lot of the rich don't, because they're the ones profiting from illegal cattle trade the most, a lot of the poor don't care because they're the ones slaughtering them, and the religious (secretly) don't care.
Even gaushalas that are supposed to save cows just sell them to slaughterhouses, everyone knows, nobody cares. The only serious step I've ever heard of the government trying to do to stop cows from getting killed is by banning all sales of cows in Tamil Nadu, but even then the monks would get around that rule by pushing the cows down the stairs leading to a temple. A cow with broken legs can be killed, so technically, no laws were broken in the process.
I've seen some religious people here and there, but talk of India usually sounds like almost everyone is religious when in my experience it isn't true, but I guess India is a big place and maybe a different part of the country is way more religious than other parts.
uhh... isn't this blatant discrimination?
No shit, it's well known the caste system is some medival bullshit, but people are content enough with it so we barely hear about it.

I like to imagine the underground beef market in india is entirely run by overly american ranchers wearing ten-gallons all armed with a colt single action army
Five years for eating fucking beef...so dumb.
Another step into the hole that is the third world.

11/10 insightful post, would rate again.
The cows should just be silent and allow being eaten.

I've said it before, and I'm saying it again. This won't last.
Maybe they should ban transportation considering how many cows die there by being too stupid to walk off the tracks of an incoming train honking it's horn.

Both India and America are democracies in the true sense of the word (although India had to practice a bit, especially when Indira Gandhi was in power).
