The hosts scored three straight after conceding an own goal early to put them in prime position in Group A. Here we bring all of the goals from the match as they happened. Croatia took a shock lead over hosts Brazil when Marcelo put through his own net in the 11th minute. Croatia attacked up the left side and put in a low cross that Marcelo accidentally knocked past goalkeeper Julio Cesar. Neymar equalised for Brazil in the 29th minute with a low, powerful shot to the far post to the relief of Marcelo and the Brazil fans. Neymar later gave Brazil the all-important lead with his second goal, albeit controversially, with a penalty in the 71st minute. The penalty was awarded in contentious fashion as Fred went down rather easily in the Croatia box. I was really hoping for Croatia to make a huge upset :)
Penalty was atrocious. Don't think it was fair on the Croatians at all.
I wonder if anyone bet on [sp]the first goal of the World Cups being an OG[/sp]
The safest bet I've ever made, now i'm off to squander it on more booze.
The referee was terrible imo. Supported Brazil all game long.
Marcelo for best Croatian player
The game went to shit with the penalty and the goal that didn't get counted.
Neymar is some lad, dodgy as fuck.
Spain vs Netherlands is the grudge match of this WC. Can't wait.
The referee was obviously afraid of being brutally murdered by fanatic brazilians
Goddamn Netherlands vs Spain match is going to be fucking hardcore :v: Recap for those who don't know, in the fucking FINALS of the World Championship we lost against Spain and now this time our first match is going to be against spain as well.
22hours, 25mins until Australia plays!!
It was kinda obvious they weren't going to lose, can you imagine the humiliation if they lost on the first match on their own World Cup? Hell they probably did something to assure that didn't happen what with some of the bullshit that went on in the match.
Croatia's defence was non-existent on the last quarter..
Also there was some guy with a vuvuzela around my building blowing it every time Brazil scored. Fucking annoying. He was the only one too, so it was just a single vuvuzela blowing in the middle of a silent night.
Lone Vuvuzela in the Night The Brazilians aren't above paying off refs either I don't think.
Wouldnt be surprised. Would do some good to the gov to have the cup won on local grounds. After all, there are some pretty strong arguments backing the same idea for Argentina 1978, so I don't think it is far fetched. And yes, whether they paid or not, the referee was way too fucking obvious.
Jesus Christ that ref. Though, I think the stadium would be unusable due to riots if Brazil lost the very first game in it's very own country.
why would they riot? people that are rioting in brazil actually want brazil to lose
why would they riot? people that are rioting in brazil actually want brazil to lose
1-Well, because they didn't want Brazil to lose? 2-Well, because if they lost in their first match against Croatia, they would be fucking nuts. Do I have to make everybody here remember what happened when River lost against Belgrano and went down to the B category? Ok its not the same, but people would riot.
The referee was terrible imo. Supported Brazil all game long.
Excuse me? He missed some pretty obvious faults in both Brazil and Croatia. I'm not a football expert, but there was a lot pulling and kicking and stuff that the ref didn't notice. The announcers on the feed I was watching pointed out Brazillian faults he missed all game long. Need I remind you the first yellow card was on a Brazillian player? Don't act like we're happy because we've made a penalty goal that shouldn't have been scored. The headlines all over the place are talking about how this wasn't a fair victory and how no one is happy with the way the game went. None of the players have gone and celebrated, none of the sports commentators have congratulated the team, everyone's commenting on how if it wasn't for the stupid ref, the game would have gone very differently. But I still believe that he wasn't bought off. Call it just blind optimism, but I'd like to believe there's some honesty behind the game. It was just a stupid ref, but if the idea that Brazil bought the game makes you sleep better at night, then so be it. Fun fact: the president of Brazil was booed in the stadium when the screens at the stadium showed their image, same for the president of FIFA. You didn't find it weird how they didn't show up at the camp for the opening, not even for a speech? Same happened at the Cup of the Confederations. Everyone knows the current government is using the World Cup as a platform for re-election and no one is happy about it. Also, you're confusing Brazil for Britain.
"Spain to fight the Netherlands tomorrow" Oh boy it's the Eighty Years' War all over again

I still feel the pain.
