Aww hell yeah. Never heard of this, but when I found out you can't do cold and dark starts in fsx I was really surprised.
This is probably the prettiest flight sim I've seen just from a gfx point, I like the art direction a ton, but frankly what's most important w/ a sim game like this is how realistic the aircraft handles. Apparently this is based upon the Microsoft Flight Sim X engine... Which was super good when it came out in like 2007 or whenever it was but now is SEVERELY outdated when it comes to simulating flight controls. Right now I'm not seeing a "killer app" in this title that makes it superior to its competitors like X-Plane 11 feature wise, or FSX for economy.

http://www.prepar3d.com/ Mind you there are no 'personal licences' there is Academic and professional. It is meant for actual simulation not for fun.
Imagine, Arma 3 + Flight sim. The possibilities are endless.
The flight sim community needs this game, we're all still running our PMDG planes on FSX and "illegally" licensed P3D installs :v:
The flight sim community needs this game, we're all still running our PMDG planes on FSX and "illegally" licensed P3D installs :v:
Have you tried X-Plane?
I've tried XP10 and was pretty unimpressed a while back, I just saw XP11 was out and I might give it a go
XP11 (IMO) isn't as easy to get into and has a bigger learning curve.
I'm really cautious as it is a dovetail game.
I'm really cautious as it is a dovetail game.
People keep saying this, but I don't know why. What's the story with Dovetail? I'm wary of this mostly because the FSX engine is extremely old and I question the value of continuing to build on top of it. Also X-Plane 11 is gorgeous looking. There's a free demo you can download, it's definitely worth a try. With 11 they've completely overhauled everything as far as I can tell and are trying to make it a user friendly thing flight sim rather than this weird open source feeling (even though it's not) cobbled together piece of technology. The built in autogen tech alone is worth looking at. It's the best out there, bar none. [t]http://i.imgur.com/V5YJ7ek.png[/t]
This is based on Microsoft ESP flight sim platform. Familiar? It's literally FSX with upgraded visuals. FSX and Prepar3D are similar in so many ways because they're all based on ESP. This flight sim is going to be a fucking disaster of a "new" product unless they have somehow (miraculously) done something useful with ESP because it is now an 11 year old platform that runs like shit on even the newest hardware. Regular flightsimmer experience here.
Any chance they let you actually mod the game? (such as adding your own custom planes). I've been sitting on a Sr-71a for a while with nowhere to put it.

Look up how to add airplanes into FSX.
There has been no mention of mod support.
If it doesn't support fsx payware it's doomed
If it doesn't support fsx payware it's doomed
It says they're working with community developers, so I'm guessing they'll put some Payware on steam as DLC. The base game already includes Orbx FTX Global textures.
I mean if its built off FSX its a given since the entire structure of the engine and game files makes it very customizatable I tried out the XP-11 demo and I'm probably gonna purchase it next paycheck, might be boring until more aircraft come out for it though

It better be more optimized than Train Sim World.
Same old engine with a few tweaks, no thanks. X-plane might have some issues but at least it's using a decent engine and has a developer that isn't trying to shovel DLC down your throat.
How someone hasn't risen to fill the void in the simulation market seems odd to me. DCS has developers that are just as bad as you can imagine but those are the most modern titles I can think of in this genre that weren't bad
DCS world tho

DCS has developers that are just as bad as you can imagine but those are the most modern titles I can think of in this genre that weren't bad
There's no money in it. Flight simulators require very specialized engines. You can't just take something like Unreal and make a good flight sim out of it. That takes a lot of time and money, especially today because the bar for graphics and simulation fidelity has been raised prohibitively high. There just isn't a market big enough for western developers to consider sinking the capital necessary into it these days. That's also why the only flight new simulation stuff seems to come from Russia. Those guys work for peanuts, so it makes a little more sense over there than over here. This is all especially true of combat flight simulators, even doubly so for modern ones (like DCS) because the market for them is a niche of a niche.
Dovetail is known for making a bunch of low-budget garbage "simulator" titles. There was a lot of hub-bub about their fishing game that was supposedly going to be really in-depth with lots of features and it turns out the game is clunky and shitty.

If Flight Sim World loads relatively quickly, runs well and has a decent interface then I'm OK with it, in my experience with X-Plane 10 it ran slowly, was impossible to configure, and you could 3 point turn a cruise liner in the loading times, all this on top of the fact it's LUDICROUSLY expensive, even compared to when FSX was new.

Well at least the newest version XP11 is. It runs a lot better and loads faster then XP10.
One thing I'm genuinely impressed about XP11 is how uncannily accurate the terrain is (in terms of geographical location, placement of highways/railroads and topology (holy shit the hills and mountains are accurate as fuk, possibly more accurate than Google Earth)). Makes VFR flying an actual feasible thing. I can fly around my base and use exactly the same features as I would do IRL to navigate. A nice thing to have is if they could use actual satellite imagery to texture the ground, and make the highway generation less wonky but that's really just aesthetics. The only problem I have with it is that the airports needs more details, right now basically a big chunk of copy-paste. Every airport has the same style/texture in game with the only difference is that they following the airport's original layout its so bad to the point that most IRL dirt/grass strips are full paved aerodromes in the game. Actual terminal buildings would be nice as well. The only reason I haven't made the full migration to XP is because of all the payware I already have on FSX. If this FSW comes with FSX add-on backwards compatibility (pretty long shot but could be possible) then I'll probably move to this but if it doesn't I'll stick to XP and FSX.
The fidelity is pretty amazing in XP11, its just the add on support that stops me from enjoying it like FSX. Most of the navigation systems don't work with XP10 aircraft and the view controls are a little weird for my taste. I like flying around in my old gas guzzlers in remote regions my self (727 is my bae) once it gets more payware I won't look back.
