A new Hollywood monster movie billed as “Godzilla meets Lost in Translation” is facing legal action from furious Japanese creators of the original metropolis-mashing giant lizard, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The famous Toho company, which has produced more than 20 Godzilla films since 1954 and also licensed two blockbuster Hollywood productions, is suing Voltage Pictures over the movie Colossal, which was announced last week at Cannes. The film is due to star Anne Hathaway as a woman who hears reports of a giant lizard attacking Tokyo, and comes to realise she has some kind of psychic connection with it. The first ever Godzilla movie, Ishiro Honda’s Gojira, depicted the monster unleashing devastation on Tokyo after being mutated due to atomic radiation exposure. And Toho says it smells a rat. The company has filed a complaint in California federal court, claiming Hollywood producers are “brazenly producing, advertising, and selling an unauthorised Godzilla film of their own
http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/may/20/godzilla-toho-sues-over-anne-hathaway-rival-movie-colossal

I don't know if I'm an idiot, but I actually thought that movie was a literal Godzilla film, so maybe they have some grounds for their lawsuit.

Apparently the promotional material for "Colossal" straight-up rips off promotional images for the actual Godzilla films, trying to claim them as their own stuff. So yeah, if that's true then I hope Toho sues these guys straight into the ground.

This is more than enough grounds for a suit.

So to describe the Toho execs as "furious" is more than appropriate, and it's not some case of "you're too similar so we want to shut you down", it is just a case of "you are ripping us off"
Academy Award Winner: Anne Hathaway. [sp] for being in 15 minutes of les miserables, i guess they ran out of nominees that year. [/sp]
If the intention was to go full on Godzilla from the start, why not just go and license the character? There was already an officially licensed american made godzilla movie (I think), I'm sure they'd let someone else have a go at it if you just paid them. I mean how much could a godzilla license really cost? In the grand scheme of things, I'd imagine probably less than the other major roles in the movie. Why not just go pay it?

Even licensed comic book guys, like IDW, are constantly hounded by Toho execs to make sure that the character is kept in check. A lot of this stems from back in 1998 with Roland Emmerich's shitsquirt of a movie, and now Toho is really uneasy with people just taking licenses now. It took a lot of bargaining from Gareth Edwards to even conceive of the idea to make Godzilla 2014

But they don't make any mention that this particular film ever even tried to get the license. They don't mention even any inquiries on it. It seems to pretty much say they just discovered it and did some research and found it to be infringing on their copyright. So I mean it's like they outright made a knockoff and didn't even try to go legit with it. Which is troubling. On top of that, too, the description of the film seems like it will focus on only the dumb parts of godzilla, the ridiculous rubber suit monster battles. The original film is principally about the horrors of nuclear war - the lizard was more of a metaphor than a real character. Whereas later godzilla films (and seemingly Colossal as well) focus on the pro wrestling-like monster fight aspects that just get silly. All around just seems like a bad idea with poor execution from the start.
Nah b she's a great actress.
I agree, wasn't implying she isn't a good actress. I just think they were giving her that oscar based on her career and not that one movie, they do that sometimes to people who got snubbed previously.
