• An Interactive Map of Racist, Homophobic and Ableist Tweets In the United States
This is The Geography of Hate – a cartographical collection of every geotagged tweet in the continental U.S. between June 2012 and April 2013 in which the word "chink," "gook," "nigger," "wetback," "spic," "dyke" "fag," "homo," "queer" or "cripple" was used in an explicitly negative way.

Created by the datavisualization experts at Floating Sheep, the interactive map was made in response to criticism that a previous map – which plotted the distribution of racial epithets in the wake of Obama's re-election – had arrived at specious conclusions about the relative amount of racist content emanating from Mississippi and Alabama. Via Floating Sheep:In order to address [one such criticism] , students at Humboldt State manually read and coded the sentiment of [hundreds of thousands of tweets containing homophobic, racist, or ableist slurs] to determine if the given word was used in a positive, negative or neutral manner. This allowed us to avoid using any algorithmic sentiment analysis or natural language processing, as many algorithms would have simply classified a tweet as ‘negative’ when the word was used in a neutral or positive way. For example the phrase ‘dyke’, while often negative when referring to an individual person, was also used in positive ways (e.g. “dykes on bikes #SFPride”). The students were able to discern which were negative, neutral, or positive. Only those tweets used in an explicitly negative way are included in the map... All together, the students determined over 150,000 geotagged tweets with a hateful slur to be negative. The image up top is the map of all the homophobic tweets deemed hateful. Over at the interactive map, viewers can see similar maps for racist and ableist tweets, and even parse the data to examine the geographic distributions of individual words. The results were compelling. "Even when normalized," write the researchers, "many of the slurs included in our analysis display little meaningful spatial distribution":
Full map is here. 1/2 of internet-able Americans are dicks gj everyone. Now let's talk about how the casual use of the word nigger has obviously skewed the data.
In America, we have collected all the douchebags and put them in West Virginia and Virgina, so that when we want world peace, we know what state to bomb.
No surprises from Alabama, its terrible here. But nice to see Birmingham is actually pretty good on the whole. We're one of the most liberal areas in the state, Jefferson one of the few counties where the majority voted for Obama in the election. We also have a pretty big LGBT population.
Cool graph, nerd. Sorry, I'm on the west coast I'm not very good at this.
Minimal rascists in Massachusettes? I call bullshit.
People stink
Some of the methodology is confusing. For ableist remarks, you could probably find other words to use that would be even more offensive. Someone asked why misogyny was not covered. At first I agreed, but I did not know what words could identify a tweet as sexist... there are too many? Maybe bitch, prude, whore, rape, slut? With the way they identify what is offensive, those words would work, I suppose.
[t]http://puu.sh/2RKYh[/t] That seems a bit much.
This looks very similar to a map of minority population. Oops i can't read, this is only ni- black people.
[t]http://puu.sh/2RKYh[/t] That seems a bit much.
If only real life had what Facepunch had a few years ago with the n-word.
Not sure if you can really use this to pinpoint hotspots of discriminating tweets, given that any tweet containing the offending word has been used regardless of context; the increasing amount of discourse surrounding these issues via twitter would mean that any city with heavy discussion regarding any of these words could show up as a hot spot
The east has a way denser population than the west, otherwise I would say there is homophobia and racism no matter where you are.

oh my bad, I missed that bit
Ohio, quit embarrassing me.
Imagine if they did one of Australia... O.O
[t]http://puu.sh/2RKYh[/t] That seems a bit much.
Your zoom is too far out, if you look closer it's not that big of a hunk of red.
Interesting, albeit too subjective for my tastes. Surprised by the low amount of usage of spick and wetback in my state. In fact, there's nearly none. Strange what translates from real life to the internet, and what doesn't.
I am pleased to find my particular part of Texas is tolerant. However someone south of Waco seems to hate wetbacks. Oh dear.
Wait, is 'cripple' an offensive word now? I know it only logs words used in a negative way, but is it bad to say cripple these days? Always seen it as less-nice than disabled person, but not offensive. Then again, when I was a kid, 'spaniard', 'mongol' and 'negro' were okay, and now they're not. Oh well :v:
what the shit is a spick [editline]12th May 2013[/editline] WETBACK? is America racist against mermaids or am I misreading this one [editline]12th May 2013[/editline]
Wait, is 'cripple' an offensive word now?
This looks very similar to a map of minority population.
clearly, the minorities are fucking racist.
I love how my state has barely any discrimination tweets. It's just tiny spots in the lightest possible blue
I'm surprised Arizona isn't redder than Satan's cock. Actually I just wanted to say that. The West Coast is probably so empty because the population density is much lower than the East Coast.
http://xkcd.com/1138/ Basically this.
Wait, is 'cripple' an offensive word now? I know it only logs words used in a negative way, but is it bad to say cripple these days? Oh well :v:
I think considering "cripple" derogatory without context is problematic, there are too many other uses for the word. Stuff like retard is blatantly derogatory though. Even though there are valid uses for it, they're not used anywhere near as frequently as valid uses for cripple.
Wow Arizona is really not that bad huh
arizona is number fuckin' one for EVERYTHING as a non-binary genderqueer pansexual shitnugget i gotta say this state is the best
Never thought I'd say this but it's a good day to be in Michigan.
