Latest: The lander is on the comet, still don't know if the harpoons will ever be able to fire and attach, but for now the lander seems to be staying landed regardless. More science data tomorrow when Rosetta rises above the horizon as seen from the lander, and is able to relay more data.

Today, a little spacecraft accompanying the Rosetta spacecraft, called Philae was released from it's companion and started the descent towards the surface of the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. It successfully landed around 15:30UTC, with confirmation coming in around 16:00.
This is the first time in history a spacecraft has landed on a comet!
The European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft has launched its Philae lander at the Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, beginning what scientists are calling "seven hours of terror" for today's historic comet landing. The lander should reach the comet's surface by 10:35 a.m. ET (1535 GMT), with landing confirmation reaching Earth at 11:02 a.m. ET (1602 GMT).
Does it have a camera? 'Cause i'd love to see pictures taken from a comet.

Yep, it has a 1024x1024 pixel CCD camera.
-cute videos-
These videos are going to get depressing when Rosetta realises it can't save Philae and has to watch it plummet into the Sun..

Bad screencap of the picture taken by Philae of Rosetta as it detached.

either that or the mission fails and philae bounces off the surface
Keep this thread updated please, the stream is not working for me!

Nvm it's working now.
Landing on this is gonna be hell

40 minutes to "first possibility of landing"
Hopefully this paired with the release of Interstellar renews people's interest in space exploration.
One of my friends has a major role in this :3

XKCD live comic about the landing :v:
We've never had such pictures of the surface of a comet before. This is surreal.
A space mission lasting years to do something mankind has never done before.
And people are still more interested in long dead celebs/kids getting into fights/videogames create killers and more of the usual inane bollocks.
All they got a 60 second mention on the news here ..honestly i'm surprised it got mentioned at all but FUCK people!
scientists are calling "seven hours of terror"
FUCK YEA
Same pictures I posted earlier, now in high res.

Stream is now of the control room as it's landing time soon.

Although we'll get a signal of the landing only in about half an hour, it's possible that it has already landed.
By now it will either have landed, or failed to land. We'll know in about 25 minutes.
I'm really excited to see what kind of information they can glean from the comet. I was watching a news broadcast about it this morning and they mentioned some kind of strange, music-like signal coming from scans of the comet. Maybe it could be a new lead on life on other planets?
It's almost feels like Christmas, except there's a chance you won't get shit :O
This has got to be stressful for everybody. Not being able to receive anything until ~28 minutes after the fact.

That is the magnetic field of the comet which is oscillating at a low frequency. Converted to sound and with the frequencies multiplied by 10000, it created something like a song.

The XKCD comic gets better and better.

I was looking at the telementry and it says the primary battery + Yebox are at a temp of -9999 degrees Celsius. Is this normal or did the lander break?
Stream is out for me.
