Now it's easy to listen to your music collection while you play games on Steam.
Point Steam to the MP3s on your computer, then browse your collection of albums and artists. You'll also find your Steam Soundtracks DLC in your Steam Music library when the associated base game is installed. Listen to albums, queue up mixes, and create playlists you love, right in your Steam library. Best of all, it's all available right within the Steam Overlay, so you can control playback without leaving your game. The Steam Music library and player consist of all the basics you need to enjoy your music without switching tasks.
To celebrate the release of the Steam Music, the following Valve soundtracks DLC are now available for free to those who own the related base games and documentary. In addition, the following Valve games are on sale for 75% off.*
Loving the soundtrack releases
So when do I get my badge for being in the steam music beta?
I hope they make it work with Spotify
That would be perfect if I, like most people, didnt have all there music on spotify.
I really need to have more music on my PC. I'm stuck listening to the stock Windows 7 music when my internet dies.

what audio formats does this support? I have a bunch of uncompressed flac and wav files, but I don't want to take the time to convert the hundreds that I have
How do you download the soundtracks? I'm a bit confused.

^ should be able to download them from there, isn't working properly for me though
I think you have to download the game the soundtrack is for, which is annoying if it's something you already played through that has little replay value or is taking too much space.

When I tried it in the beta it only supported MP3. May have changed, though.
Edit:
Supports FLAC. No WAV support. No M4A support.
It's still missing a progression bar.

how can you make a media center program and then allow either really clear FLAC or really shitty mp3? not allowing something as simple as WAV is so fucking dumb
From the beta thread:
If you have shuffle enabled, you can't select a specific song to play in album listing mode. It will just load up 5 random songs on the album and play those, and there is a good chance the song you picked won't be there. - This hasn't been fixed.
There is no way to sort by album artist so sorting by artist is useless, considering you will have like 400+ artists in that list because of featured artists. - This hasn't been fixed.
On the in-game overlay, you can only bring up the player for the album/artist/queue you selected. You can't add songs or change the album at all. - Fixed.
Track numbers and, like I said, disc numbers, are not shown and multiple discs mean multiple albums to the program. - Track numbers are now shown. Discs now show up with a (#) next to them. So "Back to Black" is disc 1 and "Back to Black (2)" is disc 2.
In album mode, it will not show the artist under or next to the song if it's different to the album artist, so you can't see who else is on the track if it's tagged that way. You have to load up the album to see this. - This hasn't been fixed.
In album view you have to know each album by name instead of by album art or artist, since it isn't shown unless you open it. - This hasn't been fixed.
You can't see length of a song anywhere. Even in the player it just shows how long the song has been played. - This hasn't been fixed.
There is no playlist support or way to edit data, which would help in trying to find out why a single song is separated from the rest of an album even if the tags are the same. - You can make playlists now. No support for editing tags
File formats are an issue considering the popularity of FLAC and M4A, but those should be added eventually. Other small things should be added like an EQ, but that's fine considering it's a beta. - FLAC was added.
[editline]24th July 2014[/editline]
Of all the things to not have, they don't have WAV support. - This hasn't been fixed.
Another thing is that you can't get rid of the albums included with something like Half-Life 2 or Portal or whatever. Or remove albums from your library at all, for that matter.

Oh. And if an album starts with a lowercase letter, it sorts to the bottom.

Hotline Miami soundtrack wont show up :(

just a really naive programming issue, uppercase always comes before lowercase, all they have to do is ignore case when sorting the albums

Kalimba's a good track tho

I checked out some of Mr.Scruffs other songs, not a bad artist
For those of you confused as to where to find the actual music: they're in the associated 'steamapps' game folder under 'Soundtrack', not actually in Steam itself.

Can't get Half-Life soundtrack even though I have HL:Source. I assume I have to have the regular Half-Life. Anyone else?
Steam music supported flac in beta. I just want last fm support for it D:

Mr. Scruff is the shit man.

Would be nice if we could remove the music thing from the taskbar menu like you can with everything else.
If they polished this up, it would be so nice. Right now it feels pretty barebones. For a start though, it's really nice. The UI is really nice.

I wouldn't worry, you can listen to the all powerful onestop.midi all day every day.

All it needs is FLAC and Last.FM support and it will be a decent music player.
