San Diego authorities OK bomb-ridden house to be burned.
The bomb experts prevailed Wednesday, amid testimony that a coffee table in the home was ground zero for explosives and the backyard was like entering a mine field.
George Jakubec, dressed in an orange federal jail jump suit sat quietly as his Attorney, Michael Berg, argued there was evidence in the rental home that might aide in the 54-year-old man's defense.
A book on mining, graphs, and drafting documents. Material that would be lost forever if the house is burned.
But the government had something the defense did not, evidence from the home that indicates it was a homemade bomb factory and testimony from a veteran FBI bomb technician who said the house was too dangerous for trained professionals to re-enter, let alone a civilian attorney or his investigator.
A coffee table in the home was characterized as ground zero, documents piled up with detonators. The bomb techs, after retrieving some evidence, said it was too dangerous to go near the table again.
"The backyard," said FBI Special Agent James Verdi, "was like entering a mine field." He said a bomb tech in the yard stepped on something, there was a loud pop. He wasn't injured, but the bottom of his boot sole had been burned.
What's more the government said no evidence was found that could help Jakubec, just the opposite.
Judge Larry Burns, in denying Berg's motion, saying it would be irresponsible of him to allow anyone to enter the home when authorities are so incessant that no one is safe there. Berg disagreed, pointing out Jakubec and his wife and their dog had been in the home for four years without any harm coming to them.
The government countered, what about the home's gardner, the November 18th explosion that seriously injured him triggering the investigation into the home and its contents.
As he left the courthouse, it appeared that Attorney Berg might appeal to Federal 9th Circuit Court, but late Wednesday afternoon, Berg said after consulting with Jakubec, "we have decided not to pursue further appeals."
Sheriff Gore said unless the weather conditions change, the burning of Jakubec's home will take place Thursday morning.
Are they insane?!
They have a vague idea about what is in the house and it's ALL BAD and yet their decision is to set the place on fire? Someone is smoking some seriously intense crack.
What if he made some chemical weapons too? Burning it would be a bad idea.
Also what the fuck is wrong with this guy.
You burn it down and you know for a FACT that all the explosives are detonated and gone.
Rather then clean them out and 20 years later when a new family moves in and a curious child finds a bomb in the rafters someone missed and kills everyone.
I await news reports of large explosions taking out the neighborhood.
This could turn interesting, anyone got a webcam and live near this place?

I agree. The article makes that place sound like a deathtrap.
Have the Fire Department and the Bomb Squad on scene, evacuate all the nearby houses, and torch the place.
Leave it to San Diego to do something fucking awesome.

The radio says they are also shutting down the nearby highway as well. They are not just evacuating people in a one block radius.
Holy shit, I want someone to film it
I'd like to have seen the look on whoever found out about all of that :v:

hey I'm actually on time for something cool!.
If the explosives are of the plastic variety, then burning the house will be a good idea. If it contains other types, and possibly toxic chemicals, this will not end well.
What are those grenades in?
What are those grenades in?
I think a case with spikes or something. They would release because of the explosion and penetrate objects and people.

:downs:
The grenade is in a form of plastic explosive/container.
6 minutes.
The first picture of the bombs looks kind of like they're atomic bombs.
This is gonna be interesting. Fingers crossed nothing bad happens.

I'm sure they are going to be quite far away from the area before completing this.

What did you expect - the entire house to explode simultaneously at all directions?

It appears to be a mold to be able to make their own grenades based on the pattern.

We were hoping that would happen, but the damn bomb squad knows stuff about explosives.
