The card has been on loan to the Babe Ruth Museum. The Babe Ruth statue beckons baseball fans to Camden Yards. A few blocks away the Babe Ruth birthplace and museum is home to the 1914 Babe Ruth rookie card. The card is now valued at $500,000. "To have the collecting community come out and pronounce the Babe Ruth rookie card is probably more valuable than the Honus Wagner T206 is a significant story. To think we have one of the few [Ruth] rookie cards is wonderful for Baltimore and for the people who come here, because they get to see what may be the most valuable of all sports collectibles," said Mike Gibbons, executive director of the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum. The museum recently learned the card's value had skyrocketed, so they were trying to find the card's owner, the son of Richard Davis, who died in 2001. Tuesday morning Glenn Davis called Gibbons. "Shortly after the article came out in the Sun this morning, we were contacted by the man who has been missing, Glenn Davis. He is living in Bethany Beach, Del. He's on business in Atlanta and somebody called him and said the museum is trying to find you," said Gibbons. "We chatted for a few minutes. I said, 'Now that you know about the card and its enhanced value, what are your intentions?' He said the card has been in [the family] through his grandfather's generation. His father brought it here. Glenn has left it here. He said if it's up to him he wants to keep it on display at the museum, but he is going to talk with his family and is going to get back to me by the weekend, so we'll see how we do," said Gibbons. Ruth was just 19 when the card's picture was taken. His image is iconic. It seems every picture of George Herman Ruth tells a story. "It's a big story. There are ways cards are evaluated. We sent photographs of the front and back of the card to Beckett, a publication of collectibles. They evaluated the card as being in good condition with a price tag of about $500,000," said Gibbons. "It's amazing that a baseball card could be worth that much money. I wish I would have hung on to some of the ones I had when I was a kid. I believe my mom sold all those in a yard sale when I was in the Navy. It's something else," said Parke Manual, baseball fan from South Carolina. It's believed only 11 Babe Ruth rookie cards are still in existence.
Wow! This thing is like 15 miles from my house...
I'd sell it to a private buyer, screw the museum

One week later: Glenn Davis missing, presumed dead.

its just a peice of cardboard why would you pay so much for it
That is an awesome show.
yeah, but it kills me when people take like 30% of what something is worth.
its just a peice of cardboard why would you pay so much for it
and money is just a piece of paper...
and money is just a piece of paper...
Actually it's a specific blend of cotton from old jeans and paper, a proprietary mix protected by the government. :eng101:
yeah, but it kills me when people take like 30% of what something is worth.
What people don't realize is that a pawn shop isn't a place to make a shit ton of money. It kills me when someone finds out the value of an item is $1000 and they say "I'll take $1000"
sell it in a private or "special" auction...make a hell of a lot of money
yeah, but it kills me when people take like 30% of what something is worth.
just because something is WORTH alot of money, doesn't mean it will get alot of money. Even if you go to auction you probably won't get its entire value. buying anything past 50% worth as a pawnshop worker is just dumb. But if they need QUICK money, you lose some worth but you get cash upfront, no strings attached. That's why you always see such weird people in the shop.
This is such a poorly written article. It's lacking so many important details, like, what the guy's address is, where he keeps the card, and what his home security is like.
That represents gold in the treasury.
The gold standard was ditched long ago
yeah, but it kills me when people take like 30% of what something is worth.
It's called buying low and selling high. That is how you make money. If the people selling the item accept what he proposes, that is their own fault.
