Where Google is involved, things get done. A lot of folks wondered how Goolge+ would grow after its launch. It was never really a question of “if” Google+ would flourish though.
Global Web Index released a report showing a change in the usage from “localized” social platforms to global social networks like Facebook, Google+ and Twitter. Twitter, while surpassed by Google+ in terms of share of users, had the strongest growth at 40% across 31 monitored markets (which also represent about 90% of the world’s internet users). 21% of the global internet users use Twitter. A whopping 51% use Facebook, which is a large lead over Google+ at 25%. Twitter is tied with YouTube in the third position.
That works out to about 343 million active users of Google+, and a little under 300 million active users for Twitter and YouTube. Facebook has been able to combat what GWI called “Facebook fatigue” and saturation and achieve about 33% growth. Based on the markets surveyed and estimates of other markets not included in their report, GWI believes that Facebook’s claims of 1 billion users is more or less on target.
The real winner in all this is Google+, who grew 27% in its own right. When coupled with YouTube, Google’s integrated services have proven to have wide appeal and it also vindicates Google’s model of combined products.
With winners must come losers, and those were the smaller, more local social networks that serve certain countries, like Me2Day (South Korea) and StudioViz (Germany) saw double-digit declines in active users. Of particular interest though, is the decline with several networks in China. Despite their growth over the past few years, new rules in China contributed to the contraction of these networks like Tencent Weibo, Sina Weibo and others.
There have been growing pushes in China to require real names and phone numbers. In addition, people in China have been adopting the use of blogs and forums which provides a perception of a little more privacy. Finally, there is mobile, the apps available for mobile use give a notable advantage to the larger global social networks like Facebook, Google+ and Twitter, each of whom have excellent mobile applications, particularly for iOS and Android devices.

So it's not just people who had one made automatically because they made a Youtube or Gmail account, but active, regular usage.
Fucking hell.

Google must be hiring a lot of people to use it.
really surprised it has more than twitter
i only use it on my phone. it's pretty good for just scrolling through and reading/looking at random interesting stuff on the what's hot page
I don't understand why China has so many social networks when all they can post is 'The government is great' and '#North Korea is our #friend"
Didn't they mesh all of gmail / google accounts / youtube accounts into the same thing? Because if they're counting that as 'google+', that explains it.

Doesn't matter if it only counts active users.

Youtube is listed as seperate, so probably not. And they do say active accounts, and I assume just checking your email doesn't count.
poor Bebo.
i still dont know what google+ is
Do I count as an active google+ member, because I have a google account? Do all of my co-workers count as google+ members, since our company uses google mail and are logged in all the time? I really need some background about how they collected this data.
Reply:
We ask all our respondents which social platforms they currently have accounts on, and whether or not they have contributed to that account in the past month. If they have, we label them an 'Active User'.
Hope that helps!

Mostly comes from people linking their Youtubes to Google+ to make silly names
oh it's actually from a survey - no actual hard data.
Well, all of this really hinges on how an active user is define, which isn't said in the article (Or, at least I didn't see anything, correct me if I'm wrong).

it's from Global Web Index, not some random reporter asking people on the street. This is the most accurate data you can probably get without being part of the companies in question.
Oh Myspace. How the mighty has fallen.
I like Google+ more than Facebook, I kind of wish they'd switch ranks
Google buy Facebook and phase it out thanks
Mostly comes from people linking their Youtubes to Google+ to make silly names
Yeah, and it pisses me off that they force you to do this now. I deleted my Google+ account and suddenly my YouTube account lost the ability to comment, rate, anything. It also changed all my uploads to private until I made a Google+ account again.
Not sure if I did something wrong and this was avoidable, but it sure is annoying being forced to have a dormant Google+ account sitting around just so I can use YouTube.
People still use orkut?!
Edit:
Looked it up. Apparently, it's fuckin popular in india and brazil.

dude no keep all the weird facebook tweens, adults who just discovered the internet, and like-spam pages away from G+
FB is a necessary evil

Of the three people in real life I actually keep in such close touch with that I'd use social networking with them, approximately negative eight use G+
If facebook imploded I could convince them to switch
Maybe I'm using social networking wrong and should just add literally everyone idk
account hijacking by stupid virus apps has been pretty prevalent lately, and stupid people in general just find ways to comment on everything you see whether you friended them or not. G+ feels more like a personal feed and less like going to the carnival to see if your friends are hanging around there at the moment
This is amazing, because I know nobody who actually uses google plus.
I deleted my google+ because it wanted to use my name and profile picture on youtube and Google play reviews.
well if you're just going to throw in every gmail user...

but no one uses it so what's the point?
Wow, tumblr is really that far down below? Sure doesn't feel like it.
Well this is a bit misleading
Everything you do with your google account now is now considered "apart of google plus" ever since they started "integrating" everything you do on google with google plus
I.e. if you've ever posted a review of place on google maps, rated a review, linked your youtube account with google, rated something on google anything, used gmail, managed your RSS feed, used calendar, used google docs, etc you are considered an active g+ member, even if you've never used the actual google+ social networking stuff
Its why everything you do now on google under your account has it under your google plus alias, settings, etc, even if you don't use google plus. It's kind of annoying really.
Nobody I know uses the actual google plus platform at all. I don't know a single person that uses it.
