Shaun King, an author and writer who is one of the leading voices speaking out against police brutality on social media, has claimed he is biracial in numerous interviews. King has said that his father is black and his mother is white and of Irish descent - but his birth certificate lists his parents as both white. In addition, King's race is listed as white in the police report of the aforementioned attack that occurred while he was in high school. King also applied for and then accepted an Oprah scholarship to Morehouse College - which are only given to black men - but claims he never lied to receive that scholarship. The 35-year-old responded to the controversy on Twitter by saying; 'Out of LOVE for my family, I've never gone public with my racial story because it's hurtful, scandalous, and it's MY STORY.'
could you imagine living in a world where people get "outed as white"
Why do black only scholarships even exist?
could you imagine living in a world where people get "outed as white"
Imagine living in a world where there's quite a few who believe that's a good thing.
Could you imagine a world where we didn't care about peoples skin pigmentation and instead focused on what they have to offer as human beings?
Why do black only scholarships even exist?
Because for one, people who give scholarships out can make any sort of requirement they want for those who get them. And for another, it's suppose to help give minorities an edge in financing their education in what would otherwise be a completely white dominated thing.
could you imagine living in a world where people get "outed as white"
That's not the point. The point is that he's a liar.
If he looks black and gets treated as black, then hes black.
Why do black only scholarships even exist?
Its racist. No getting around it.
https://twitter.com/ShaunKing his twitter for those wondering. he addresses the biz with the #numbered
Its racist. No getting around it.
Are women only scholarships sexist?
Are women only scholarships sexist?
Well sexism is discriminating based on sex so by definition yeah.
Because for one, people who give scholarships out can make any sort of requirement they want for those who get them.
Well sexism is discriminating based on sex so by definition yeah.
I thought it was called affirmative action?
Are women only scholarships sexist?
Yes, same applies to male only scholarships. Limiting someone's access to education based on sex, race, family, whatever is stupid.
please dont turn this thread into a debate about affirmtive action. every thread i get into turns into that.
Are women only scholarships sexist?
Yes, in that they discriminate based on gender. I don't think there's any real way around that. What's silly about women only scholarships is that women already outnumber men in universities by a considerable number in at least most (if not all) western countries. Meanwhile, male-only scholarships don't really exist and just the idea of them has been attacked by media outlets in many cases.
please dont turn this thread into a debate about affirmtive action.
Well discrimination based on sex, gender and race is pretty important.
Ya except the problem is minority scholarships look at the individual and other scholarships just look at test score and GPA, which is disadvantaging to low income white students, I get why they exist but I hate that scholarships are based too much on the wrong things
Not's not true at all. The vast majority of scholarships are specifically based on things other than test score and GPA like an essay, volunteer work, sports, etc.
that women already outnumber men in universities by a considerable number in at least most (if not all) western countries
Except in STEM fields.
Are women only scholarships sexist?
That's sexist by definition. Especially considering women are already "privileged" when it comes to universities anyways.
Well discrimination based on sex, gender and race is pretty important.
right but the point of AA biz is counteract the systemic discrimination by creating a policy to make an impact now while changing societal consciousness takes time. i really dont wanna say more on this because it is so tertiarily related to this "news" story. Even if you think they are bullshit im pretty sure king 1.) Is Biracial 2.) Faces discrimination insofar as he is marked and identifies himself as a Black person so he would qualify for the scholarship and that this news biz is only drumming up Drama over King to assault his ethos because they want him to shut up over police brutality
Except in STEM fields.
Some STEM fields, not all. Meanwhile men are outnumbered in the majority of non-STEM fields. edit: Getting pretty off-topic at this point.
Why do black only scholarships even exist?
Because it's not equality until you discriminate against white men.
sexist and racist scholarships what a time to be alive
sexist and racist scholarships what a time to be alive
We are all for equality so lets make these totally unequal scholarship conditions
could you imagine living in a world where people get "outed as white"
Fucking posers is why.
White people win again :privilege:
Could you imagine a world where we didn't care about peoples skin pigmentation and instead focused on what they have to offer as human beings?
Quotas and black scholarships are in place to give minorities an edge they need, the United States is still very racist (We're not Jim Crow laws anymore, but it could be better) and encouraging black youths through things like scholarships helps deal with those problem, just think of an inner-city black kid, instead of joining a gang, works hard and gets rewarded with a scholarship to college to help him pursue a high paying career. Without these scholarships in place, Black and Hispanic attendance to higher education would be much lower which would keeps blacks and Hispanics in the disadvantageous position they're in (Which is part of the reason that this systematic racism exists), it has more of an impact than "Feel-good measures" and calling it racist is silly.

The fact that this hasn't fixed the issues you're talking about makes me doubt your conclusion.
