Here’s some pretty alarming proof about the dangers of standing under a tree in a thunder storm. In this blinding clip, mother nature tears through the sky and explodes a tree in Saratoga Springs, New York. The lightning strike causes wood splinters to burst out before branches come crashing to the ground. Luckily, no-one was around at the time. A spokesperson for the National Weather Service said: ‘This breathtaking lightning video from Saratoga Springs, NY, shows the incredible power of lightning, and why you don’t want to be standing under a tree! When thunder roars, go indoors!’
http://metro.co.uk/2014/06/08/lightning-strike-obliterates-tree-4754218/
Dammit Thor, watch your aim
Dammit Thor, watch your aim
Nah mate, it's Zeus, you know what he's like. Actually, what are the physics at play here? So there's a massive surge of high voltage electrons, and then it explodes? Is it being turned into plasma, or maybe the water content boils instantly?
Nah mate, it's Zeus, you know what he's like.
It could just have easily been Indra, got to give our own local gods an honorable mention at least
"Fuck this tree in particular"
coulda been the ghost of Tesla for all it matters
Could've been Solaire.
I can't believe that there are some people that survived this
Could've been Solaire.
honestly legitimately reminded me of a Sunlight Spear
If that's actually real, they should probably be forced to replant at least double the number of felled trees required to carve out that message. Either that, or the higher ups should have a blood debt to repay, by which I mean they are forced to donate blood to be converted into plant fertilizer until there is enough fertilizer to nourish the young saplings replanted as tribute. That way, no-one has to die yet the price is still paid in blood, AND the tosspots who thought this was a good idea end up being super-woozy and light-headed every day for months, as penance for their crimes against nature. Sadly there are no powerful druids or treants to enforce this, and there is the game-breaking OP glitch wherein [$$$ = power], whereas it should be [INT = power].

The sudden surge in electrical current combined with the resistance of the tree itself causes the wood to heat up VERY quickly to the point that it turns into plasma, and also flash-boiling the water.
Seeing what this can do to a giant tree makes me even more amazed that people can survive lightning strikes.
Seeing what this can do to a giant tree makes me even more amazed that people can survive lightning strikes.
People generally aren't made of wood though
Are people more conductive than trees? And is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Nicolai Tesla would be proud
This kills the tree
Was it a fig tree because this wouldn't be the first time God cursed one of those.
Anyone notice the chunk of the tree landing in that black trash can. God was just playing some hoops.
Lightning, ladies and gents. Awesome.
So what really blew the tree apart was the steam from the vaporized sap and water in the wood?
Super-heated steam, on top of that. Once you heat steam past the boiling point it picks up heat REALLY quickly, enough to even catch things on fire. (I know, catching shit on fire with FUCKING WATER. Is your mind blown yet?)
You know, seeing lightning completely destroy that tree makes me wonder how the fuck people survive being struck by lightning.
