Five-month-old baby killed in freak baggage carousel accident at Spanish airport
A five-month-old baby has been killed in a freak accident on a baggage collection carousel at a Spanish airport.
The boy is believed to have become trapped in a conveyor belt at Alicante-Elche Airport on the Costa Blanca.
The tot's American mum had touched down on an easyJet flight from London Gatwick with the baby and another young child when the tragedy occurred.
After disembarking the plane around 11pm on Wednesday, they entered the terminal and arrived at the baggage collection area.
She placed the child inside a baby carrier on a stropped heavy baggage collection belt - which was activated by the weight, setting it in motion - and watched on in horror as he was whisked off.
ok don't get me wrong this is horrible, but why the FUCK would you put your baby carrier on a baggage collection belt!?
how could she not go after him? I have a 1 year old sister and i would rather it be me than her, plus they dont move thatfast so that you wouldn't be able to catch up? plus it was a bit stupid to put her baby in it whilst it was in the belt. Anyway disregarding that it's still terribly sad and i feel awful for the mother.
I'm not trying to be funny or anything, but what if she did it on purpose?
As tragic as this is, I really have a hard time picturing how this happened. Aren't those belts usually really slow? Sorry if I sound insensitive.
Seems like the child was half-resting on the belt, half on the edge, then when it started moving, it rotated the carrier until it tilted off onto the floor.
Sad yes, but this is unbelievably hard to pull off. She should of been awarded the Darwin Award, not the child.

Do you even know what a Darwin award is? Or the fact that he has at least one other child, and that she most likely isn't sterile, disqualifies her from ever getting one?
So wait, what exactly happened? He ended up on the belt, okay, weight activated, aight...
But they aren't fast moving in the slightest, and baggage claim loops don't go anywhere after arriving, they loop in circles, and for obvious reasons.
Where exactly did the baby end up, and what exactly caused his death?

What is this and why does it exist?
edit:nvm thought the baby carrier was a feature of the collection belt.
Very disturbing...
I couldn't really form any picture in my head of how the baby died.
First I thought it was a machine that would roll it in plastic wrapping or something but I don't think so.

It says at the end of article that the baby was trapped in rollers at the end of a belts drop zone.
The infant was dragged along the belt and became trapped at the entrance of the bag drop portal, where luggage emerges.
so the baby was crushed by other luggage, maybe? So sad either way.

But what baggage claim area has a baggage drop zone? Once the baggage arrives its supposed to loop in the same room.
If she was arriving, why is she dropping off cargo?
I guess what I'd like to see is a layout of the baggage claim area with where she was marked down, but we probably won't get that until later in the investigation.

That is the only thing I can think of, but surely it would have stated that instead of a vague "stuck in the rollers"
Was the baby still in the carriage? What does the baggage area look like? GAH so many questions!
It's obvious from this accident that we need more safety signs, lights and guardrails, right?

More like a parenting license.
Most people are too retarded to take care of a child.

Literally this.
People have kids when they have no money, are complete idiots and are too young and un-established.
That's a shitty way to raise kids and their kids usually end up having no money, being idiots and having kids at a young age.
Parenting license is a great idea and all, but how do you enforce it? If a couple has a baby without one, what happens?
Also the idea that the government has control over if you can reproduce or not. Bad idea to start things like that.
Fucking this
I'm not sure how things work in Spain, but every conveyor belt system I have ever seen at an airport has stripped markers on the floor, flashing warning lights (when it's moving) and signs like this [t]http://www.mysafetysign.com/img/lg/S/Watch-Your-Fingers-Caution-Sign-S-2620.gif[/t] around the belt.
How she manged to do this I have no idea.
I've been to that specific airport and can confirm that there are warning signs all over, so the blame still lies on the parents.
Are there bizarre drops in the baggage claim?

If you don't get your baggage before it reaches the end it falls to a lava pit, at least here in the UK
I wonder why no one picked the baby off the conveyor belt.

Nobody was probably paying any attention to him.
