British teaching unions say sexism is culturally maintained by women themselves.

The National Union of Teachers annual conference will hear claims sexism is being “rebranded” as something fashionable and mainstream.
Delegates are to criticise the “raunch culture” of lap-dancing clubs and pole dancing.
Teachers, meeting in Liverpool, say it can have a “disastrous effect on the self-image of girls”.
The National Union of Teachers will hear warnings from teachers that “sexism and inequality are still a huge factor in shaping women’s lives”.
The conference will hear claims that old-fashioned sexism has not gone away, but has been re-invented into something that appears to be “ironic or empowering”.

Teachers will warn that pole dancing clubs and beauty pageants are turning back the clock on decades of campaigning for sexual equality.
Woah shit, looks like all that was for naught then.
There will also be claims that this is linked to the number of sexual assaults and incidents of domestic violence.
Hence the decline in violent crime rates.
It's an interesting point, but I'm not sure I agree with it or not. Oversensationalised though.

no WONDER things have been going downhill for women's rights since the 60's!

Has nothing to do with the sexualization of women?
Saying "sexism is over!" and pointing at the gender pay gap is like saying "racism is over" and pointing at slavery
I don't personally think strip clubs and the like are inherently sexist but this chart has nothing to do with anything
Sexual equality= Women covering up.
Has nothing to do with the sexualization of women?
Well surely if the pay gap is decreasing, women are being better treated?
Rape is declining too (as a part of general violence), domestic violence is down.
Let us hope they continue to fall!

Said no one.
Also it's not over, it's been getting better and will continue to do so.
NUT delegate Kiri Tonks said social media was making it easier for sexism to be spread and better sex education for both sexes was needed.
Depends on the site really, and schools need to teach that pornography often offers an impersonal and unemotional perspective of sex.
i agree, unless women are ashamed of their body and stop 'oversexualizing' themselves by showing off skin then proceed to wear victorian dresses, it's all their fault, im all for stopping sexism, but im just saying!
egalitarianism for life
Well surely if the pay gap is decreasing, women are being better treated?

The graph doesn't address the sexualisation of women though.
I think there are problems on both sides (i.e. men being unfair to women without realizing it and women taking it without realizing it) with regard to ending sexism and it's more of an unconscious thing than a conscious hatred of women. More men need to look at themselves and understand that some things they do are in fact sexist and more women need to understand that they're perfectly within their rights to speak out. It's definitely not a dead and buried problem.

So despite violence against women declining, their wages rising, and improvement in abortion rights, somehow they are all becoming increasingly sexualized and becoming worse off for it?

Well that's all really great but I think unwanted and harmful sexualization of women is getting worse despite these other things getting better.
Strip clubs aren't the reason though, I blame media
media did 9/11 too
sexism == sexualiziation (not)

Those are different things that won't necessarily increase or decrease together
Well that's all really great but I think unwanted and harmful sexualization of women is getting worse despite these other things getting better.
So, how has sexualization gotten worse in the past 50 or so years?

Yet the ones I mentioned improving have all been improving steadily. It seems odd to suggest that as women are treated more fairly, they are somehow also being increasingly sexualized as well.
So, how has sexualization gotten worse in the past 50 or so years?
50 years ago we didn't have the ability to enter medieval fantasy worlds where women always have their boobs out, for one.
We wrote about those fictional places and made films but it wasn't something that children were being raised on.
Delegates are to criticise the “raunch culture” of lap-dancing clubs and pole dancing
yeh all those stripclubs run by women where the women working in them love selling their bodies are really glamorous and ruining feminism
oh wait they don't exist

Women are just being treated unfairly in less obvious ways
The overall situation is by far better but the issues are just becoming different

Okay, from what I've read it seems to be an academic way of saying "Women, if you don't want to be sexualized, stop dressing like sluts."
Why are people so afraid of sex?
because it is normal

So what is the solution to this problem?

Sexualizing =/= sex
There is nothing wrong in sex, or wanting sex, or finding women sexually desirable.
The problem with sexualizing is that it reduces a womens value to how sexually attractive she is or isn't.

So the feminist movement is reporting diminishing returns?

this is the only proper dress for a woman otherwise she's just asking to get raped
im an egalitarian so i'm not trying to be sexist, but just saying if you show off skin you're just asking for it
