Of all world leaders, Vladimir Putin must be the only one who could get away with this. The Russian prime minister was pictured getting to grips with a polar bear today as he helped a group of Arctic scientists with their research. As the team put a tracking collar on the 36-stone beast, Mr Putin appeared to be calmly pinching its nose. Two years ago he even received a cuddly tiger cub for his birthday. The tenderness he has often displayed for animals is at odds with his usual judo-practicing, gun-posing tough guy image. But the Russian King of the Wild Frontier keeps environmental issues close to his heart. 'The reduction in the surface of the ice sheet, the melting of the ice, all this adds to the complications in the conditions of life' of the polar bears, he said. And he called for a 'major cleaning' of the Arctic, where the level of pollution is six times higher than normal. 'The reduction of military cooperation after the collapse of the Soviet Union resulted in this scrapheap which we can observe,' the Russian premier said. Thousands of barrels containing used lubricants, as well as plane, car and other wreckage have been piled up in the Arctic for years. Last year he condemned the hunting of baby whitecoat seals, saying it was a 'bloody business'. In 2006 he decided to re-route a controversial oil pipeline around Siberia's Lake Baikal, winning praise from environmental groups. Ok, that's it. I'm getting a big portrait of Putin and I'll put it in a golden frame, and surround it with Russian flags.

How many other people can say that they've honked a polar bear's nose at any point in their lifetime? And don't bring up the fact that it was sedated, because that stuff doesn't always work. A sedated bear can still wake up and rip your spine out at any time.
Putin was already awesome, man it just keeps getting better and better. I want to hug him
He's such a fucking badass
God I love Putin. Best politician ever.
he's such a stud

Such badassery only lives in Putin.
Tigers, Bears, dissenting journalists conveniently standing next to open 14th story windows- Putin will beat them all.

yup, the russian propaganda is pretty effective, it seems... to all of you praising him for being a badass, etc: did you ever stop and think that this is all fake and/or staged so people stop looking at him as a dictator? yep that's right. russia is not democratic. Belarus isn't either if you haven't noticed.
