Japanese electronics firm Fujitsu (FJTSF.PK - news) has developed a wireless recharging system using magnetic technology which it hopes to put in products and sold in 2012. The system is capable of simultaneously charging multiple portable electronic devices likes mobiles, digital cameras and laptop computers without using power cords. Devices can be charged at distances of up to several metres and it could lead to wireless charging 'hotspots' in public places, similar to Wi-Fi internet zones in shops and cafes. Fujitsu says its technology means it can charge devices 150 times faster than the time which is normally required. The firm is also looking at applying the system to power up electric cars. In what is claimed to be a world first, the technology works by sending electricity across magnetic fields between the wireless charger and the electronic device. Fujitsu calls it the magnetic resonance method, which uses a coil of wire and an electronic component called a capacitor to create a resonance between it and the power receiver. The firm said: "This technology paves the way to integrating compact wireless charging functions into mobile phones and enabling multiple portable devices to be charged simultaneously without any restrictions on their position with respect to the charger." It added: "Developments are under way for a broad range of potential applications, charging everything from portable electronics to electric cars." It has designed a compact, slim power receiver, and manufactured prototype mobile phones with built-in wireless charging. Futjitsu claimed the prototype mobiles can charge anywhere within the power-transmitter's range, with 85% efficiency. The company said its tests found the performance of the chargers varied according to the size of the transmitter's coil. It found the optimal coil size for efficiently charging three devices, took roughly 10 minutes, or 150 times faster than the time it had taken before.
So there will be chains of electricity flying round my room? Safe.
They should just make these everywhere, with much higher ranges. Never need to charge your mobile devices.
Was about to rate late because I thought you were just discovering an article on those lame "power pads" that require you to have something hooked up to your phone and are pretty pointless. But this, this is awesome :science: If this is as effective as they're saying it could create an entirely new branch of electronics that are less dependent on traditional batteries. Cordless mouse anyone?
Wireless charging is already a reality, and rather commonplace. Sounds really inefficient

Can't wait when we have wireless outlets.

Which made it bulky and defeated the purpose of "charging on the go". So it's built in? When I looked at them at Target a few months back there were various components you had to buy separately.
Holy shit, this will also solve one of the problems of cars driving automatically on the road to a destination. Imagine all the other uses, this is amazing.
Sounds really inefficient
Magnetic energy can enter your phone/device from every angle, at a pretty high rate, instead of just through a small copper wire.
Time to use my desktop as a laptop :science:
Cordless mouse anyone?
Actually sounds pretty genius, you don't have the mouse plugged in, but instead the mouse pad which just so happens to be charging the mouse. Even better would be the mousepad plugging into a usb port to supply the power.
Charging via induction isn't really that new of a concept at all, I'm surprised it hasn't become mainstream yet.
So there will be chains of electricity flying round my room? Safe.
ow my IQ
About 2 years late :v:
"recharging hotspots" No one will do this because of the cost of electricity. We're really becoming an society augmentated by electronics. Technology :iia:! Would be cooler if it wasn't full of the media snooping and uncovering data, and misinterpreting it. The soccer moms, failing to understand what the data is, further misinterpreting it. The corporations, feeding the media with false statistics and claims. The government, regulating and restricting. Would be cooler if the internet, was the technology of today. but the user base of 10 years ago.
Huge amount of wasted electricity. Once we create a big lump of electricity for the world to use, at which we can waste it freely Then we can bathe the streets in these fields so electric cars never run down.
Would it be so hard to have it only activate at the press of a button? A simple bluetooth interface could send the device important data about how charged your battery is.

Wait, wouldn't this SUCK for computer builders, as you can't allow electricity to contact a part being inserted or else it fries the part? Mom: Hey son, watcha doing? Son: Just building my computer. Mom: Oh I can't take all them techincal jib-jabs, here let me turn on the phone charger Son: NO MOM NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
magnetic resonance method
My mind immediately turned to halflife.
