Last week, the Seattle game development community lost a truly unique, kind, and talented person. Early last Thursday morning, Jesse Bright (/u/jessebright) posted a goodbye to his Facebook friends and took his own life.
You may be familiar with Jesse's coding work on the Age of Empires HD project, CounterStrike: Global Offensive, and Windborne at Hidden Path Entertainment. But game programming was just one part of Jesse's life. His circle of friends was immense, for good reason - he was a sweet, brave soul with a sharp wit and an adorably wicked and off-kilter sense of humor.
Damn shame, rest in peace.
if he worked on CS:GO then i won't miss him

Rest in peace. At least you leave behind part of you, in your work.

good to know there is no reason to miss you either then
I've heard his name before though, can't remember exactly where. RIP.

or his kid
Rest in peace. But I can't help but wonder what makes a man who has a great job and a kid end his own life. Searching around I couldn't find any info on why he might have done it.
What would drive him to do this?

Some of the brightest and happiest people can have many inner demons that torment them. We might never find out what caused him to do something like this. It's a shame, reading further in to this he was an outright awesome guy and many people will miss him. I hope his family gets through this tragedy, my condolences to them.
Every news like this i'm always left wondering why.
Should I know who this is?
He announced on Facebook that he was ending his life. Despite the best efforts of his friends, family and emergency staff, we were unable to prevent this tragedy from taking place.
Jesus christ
It's terrible when depression effects the best and brightest among us.

Everyone asked me why. I didn't really have an answer. All i could say was that life wasnt worth living anymore. But i couldnt say why.
The only thing left now is to say "what can we do to stop this from happening?"
I know it's a little morbid but, is there a copy of what he posted to facebook available anywhere? Sad as it is I've always had a curiosity for people's last words, almost like a small insight into their rationale or thought process a the end.
Rest in peace mate.

i don't want to necessarily make game dev life seem scarier or worse than it is, but although making games is a dream job, especially working on a title as prolific and popular as csgo, it's an incredibly emotionally and physically taxing profession, like most commercial arts. again, i'd be careful to link two things together - god knows what was happening in this dude's head and/or in his personal life - but i don't even want to imagine the kind of pressure that comes with being the lead dev of a competitive game as huge as csgo

Assuming he suffered from depression, that's literally all it takes. One day you can just lose control of it and it will overwhelm you, outside influences can make this more likely, but it does just happen. Suicide is such a spur of the moment action and having a mental health issue that affects your decision making and emotional state as wildly as depression makes it all that more common.
It sucks, and it comes with very little warning a lot of the time. Some people may not even realise they suffer from depression until one of these episodes hits and they just kill themselves with no sign of wanting to the day before.
Rest in peace man.
Depression is a hell of a disorder. It's definitely overwhelming a lot of the time.

I don't understand how somebody could be so desperate to commit suicide when they have a young child... I feel really sorry for his Son.
Taking the coward's way out is never the answer, especially when you have family with kids.
My condolences to the family.

He was a goddamn human being. Come on, man.
Every time I read these news I feel sick because they always tell how much of a good and nice person he/she was. It's really morbid to know someone who's good and funny could be really dark inside and you won't even know until it's too late.
Best wishes to his family and friends, hope they can pull through without major issues.
