Spanish Dracula eh? I'll have to watch that sometime.
Spanish/Italian horror is usually always some of the best in the genre so I'm not too surprised he picked that one. It's amazing how he can argue with himself and get to an actual decision :v:
I like stuff like this better than the Nerd video's he does.

Well thankfully there's plenty of it and next month we get Cinemassacre Monster Madness which is probably one of my favourite kinds of vids from him.
I really like Rolfe when he's his self, not the AVGN (I like his persona aswell, but it's a nice switch around)
awesome video, I'll have to check a few of those films out
OH FUCK, it's almost halloween again. Gotta pick a costume
I disagree on best alien movie, which would be The Thing for me, and best zombie movie, which is 28 Days Later (yeah I know they're not actual zombies shut up).
I love James's Halloween videos. I watch them every year, worth the wait.

I think he was just trying to be as unbiased as he could naming the quintessential horror films of each genre, rather than his personal favorites. He wanted to go with The Thing but thought that Alien ultimately trumped it which I agree with. Though his reasoning that it wasn't relevant enough to outer space or something seemed kind of weird. Same with the zombie category, he wanted to go with another one but he admitted that there probably isn't a movie that's done everything as well as the original Dawn of the Dead.
I don't necessarily agree with him on a lot of them. Alien and Zombie, yeah, I agree.
But the rest are just so old, are they even considered horror anymore? They should be reclassified as "nostalgic". Significant and ground breaking? Hell yeah. But "scary" in any way shape or form? Hell no.
And the point of a horror flick is to scare people in some form or another.

Well, I mean, back in the 30's/40's when horror movies just started, that shit used to scare a lot of audiences. Nowadays, it looks nothing like scary and rather funny compared to today's horror films which also have a shit ton of gore.

Yeah, I'm not saying they are bad films, just old. But when it comes to truly scaring someone, some dude in a cheesy costume really isn't going to cut it these days.
The films are great, but I was just hoping he'd recommend some stuff that is actually scary. Dawn of the Dead and Alien were about the only ones that could achieve that.
I love his videos, wish I was into horror movies so this would be better for me to view.
Fucking monster madness soon, I love that shit.
I'm kinda glad he's busy with the AVGN movie, he posts much more videos like this one because they take less time, and he can make them while filming the AVGN movie. I hope he'll continue with them even after the movie's done

The movie is done, he's got minor segments to be shot on the east coast and editing to be done. Editing is taking the most time for him as he's trying to get someone to do it or at least help with it since he's shot so much stuff.

Glad he's not trying to rush through everything

Oh by the way, I like Mike's videos too. I hate it when people give him flack in the comments, especially the ones that don't realize how much Mike's done for the show.
I like them too but I know not as many people appreciate them hence why I don't usually post them.
I might make some sort of Cinemassacre megathread once monster madness gets underway. That way people can catch up on stuff they might not have seen like Cinemassacre 200 etc.
I totally agree with Alien, but I'm surprised that when he mentioned The Thing From Another World, he didn't mention John Carpenter's The Thing. That's one of my favorite alien movies of all time.

Might be because he thought since Carpenter's The Thing isn't as well known as Alien is, it's kind of hard to count it in.

I thought it was pretty well known, actually.
I thought it was pretty well known, actually.
Me too but it's really a cult film at best. Critics generally panned it at the time and some still do, majority of the people I know who aren't massive movie buffs have no idea about The Thing in any incarnation at all.
If that's the logic he was going with, he wouldn't have selected the spanish version of Dracula as the best vampire film.
Good point, maybe he just forgot then or was really honestly trying to veer towards classic-era films?
My favorite Dracula movie is the one from 92, but I guess it's more drama than horror.
The Wolfman was definitely a good werewolf movie. They introduced a conflict right at the start, giving a strong sense of dramatic irony. And the sets were pretty good for the time.

I think he may not have mentioned Carpenter's mostly because, like The Thing From Another World, none of it takes place in space. Now, I'm not saying it's a bad alien movie because it never goes to space, but I think the fact that Alien takes place primarily on a ship in space makes it more iconic and fit the stereotypical image of an alien movie. That's why I think James decided on Alien and I think by that reasoning I agree with him, although I do like The Thing even more.

That makes way more sense.
I love that, how he's able to be really critical and fight against what he personally feels is the best.
I don't understand why he keeps choosing old 1950-1980 movies instead of either the updated or newer films. I'm not saying I don't agree with him on some of the movies, I just don't understand why he ignores so many others.

Because sometimes the older versions of films are better than new ones
