It was the summer of 1997 and St. George resident William Barnes was dredging for gold in Nevada County, Calif., when he saw something that changed his life. "I had this thing walk down the canyon right next to my tent," he says. "It was close enough to touch. I don't know how long it stood in front me. Time kind of froze." It was dark when Barnes saw the creature, but he describes it as being "thick and muscular," probably weighing 450-500 pounds. It had human-like hands and feet, with "well-manicured" body hair. Barnes is one of many people throughout the United States who claim to have seen a creature called "Bigfoot" or "Sasquatch" - not to be confused with the "Yeti" or "Abominable Snowman" of the Himalayas. Technically classified as a cryptid - a creature whose existence is suggested but is not recognized by scientific consensus - the Bigfoot legend does have some prominent believers in the scientific community, including primatologist Jane Goodall. In a 2002 interview on NPR, Goodall said she was sure an undiscovered primate exists. She wasn't talking about a single creature either but a species. Barnes is sure of it as well. He believes his sighting was because of curiosity on the part of the creature, which he often refers to as a "hominoid" in recognition of its similarity to a human being. "There was no threat," Barnes says of the encounter. "It seems like a threat when you go through something like that but there wasn't. It was curiosity." Now it's his turn to be curious. Barnes spent 12 years researching how to best capture film evidence of a hominoid, gathering fellow believers and researchers along the way. For the past few years Barnes has focused on The Falcon Project - an attempt to capture footage of a hominoid with an aerial camera mounted on a remote-controlled airship. "You can't chase the things on the ground," Barnes says of the decision to take to the skies. "They're not going to sit there and say 'cheese' for you, that's for sure." The technologically advanced airship is still a concept as Barnes and his teammates look for an investor to fund the project.
http://www.thespectrum.com/article/20111002/LIFESTYLE/110020338/St-George-man-searches-Bigfoot?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|Frontpage|p
I read the title as "St. George searches for bigfoot" and wondered why a dead saint would want to do that.
He just wants funding for his remote airship so that he can watch the neighborhood women undress from the sky.
While this sounds completely retarded, it would be motherfucking awesome if he actually found bigfoot.
Slow news day?
Slow news day?
It's not news at all but still a semi-interesting read to pass the time for about 5 minutes.
