A BOXING fan is in hot water after streaming the Danny Green vs Anthony Mundine fight on Facebook Live, with Foxtel warning it will take action against him.
At one point, more than 150,000 people were watching Darren Sharpe’s live stream, avoiding spending money to see the final professional fight between the rivals on Foxtel’s pay-per-view.
But what the Brisbane mechanic didn’t count on was the company using its technology to catch up with him and send him a warning.
The pay TV company then cut off his and other live Facebook streams — as well as pirate versions shared on YouTube and Periscope to allow fans to watch for free.
Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh told news.com.au that people streaming pay-per-view TV was a threat to the future of live events and the livelihoods of thousands of people who work on producing the content.
“Foxtel spends over $900 million each year on the production of local content including live sports,” he said. “This investment is only possible when the rights to that content can be protected. Without copyright protection, many of these events and productions would not exist and the thousands of people employed in their creation would not have jobs.
“The incident with Facebook last night is not just theft. It is a threat to the future viability of live events such as boxing and to the sustainability of the content industry generally.
“The instigators of the illegal streams on Facebook were aware that what they were doing is illegal, they were reminded of this by Foxtel staff and one has gone so far as to create a fundraising page in anticipation of his legal costs. As you would expect, Foxtel will be taking appropriate action.”

I mean, he knew what he was doing so I cant really say I'm sorry for the guy. The company pitches a good point in that this is what they do and how they make money, if it was free a lot of people would be out of jobs
"It cost $59.95 to watch the match legitimately through Main Event and Foxtel."
And here's the problem. That's a fucking exorbitant price just for you to watch an event at home on TV or a computer or something.

I don't condone streaming it for free or anything but an easy way to cut down on people watching it illegally is to make it something a reasonable person would pay.

In the world of Netflix, HBO Go, YouTube, Twitch etc. I can't imagine EVER spending almost $60 watching a single TV broadcast.
Honestly, it's time for pay-to-view to enter the 21st century and modernize.
Who actually buys PPV content anymore. Just go to the bar and watch it there

Yes I'm aware that the bar will be paying the fee and will probably charge a BS cover charge

Welcome to dealing with foxtel, they've got a monopoly on pay TV here
A while back if you wanted to watch game of thrones in Australia, you had to pay $45 a month (plus all the setup costs) for their service, or pirate it
You couldn't even buy it on iTunes because they got exclusive rights to it
Digital piracy is what happens when the free market works. People don't want to spend that much money so someone streams it and others watch. If PPV reduced its price to something a little more affordable then maybe some folks would find it harder to watch a stream.
Foxtel has a monopoly on the pay TV market so I could care less if they lose money. Hopefully streaming services will kill this shithouse company sooner or later, when netflix or google buy sport streaming licences.

Not only that, the fight could last only a couple seconds. Imagine paying $60 to watch a fight and the fight lasts less than 30 seconds.

That reminds me of a PPE WWE match that lasted a couple minutes because one of the fighters came drunk as hell.
