Microsoft Research creates intractable 3D holographic display.
Vermeer is a novel interactive 360° viewable display suitable for a tabletop form factor from Microsoft Research Cambridge. It provides viewpoint corrected stereoscopic 3D graphics to simultaneous users 360° around the display, without the need for eyewear or other user instrumentation. In contrast to other systems, Vermeer allows users for the first time, to reach into and directly touch 3D objects inside a display volume. It also enables simultaneous users 360° viewing of the 3D object. Inherently other 360° systems restrict interactions to outside the display volume behind a protective glass or plastic dome.
Don't really have any more in-depth article about it other the the YouTube description, if I find one I'll add it here.
So primitive..
Years from now we'll like back at this video the same way we look at computers when they were first being created.
So... how much longer till holoporn is available?
I hope they work on making this widely available so it can be developed more. It looks like a cool idea.
Holy shit, so much stuff coming out this year about free-floating holograms, it's fantastic!

WE ARE EVER CLOSER.

Like how the most powerful computer 20 years ago was the size of a building and now the same power (more even) is available in cell phones and MP3 players smaller than the average palm.
Except I imagine the size will remain the same but the technology to detect and project will increase so much people will look at this prototype and think of it as some kind of joke.
this is why I want to go to MIT
Can't wait for the future of this
So they used that old "pig in a shiny saucer appears to float above the container" trick
Still not a 3D image floating on your desk ala star wars holograms :( It's just an optical illusion, it wouldn't work if you are sitting down.
Pretty cool stuff.

Now real life can be just like Dead Space!
Chalk up another one for the Kinect's technologies.

It would if the table were very large and the display covered its entire surface
The spinning globe was my favorite, this looks neat.
So the projector is spinning, and it displays an image spinning in the opposite direction, causing the flickering?
So the projector is spinning, and it displays an image spinning in the opposite direction, causing the flickering?
the flickering is because of the camera.
This is not really a holograph/gram.
How much longer till Apple makes them commercially available and takes credit for inventing them?
so when can i order my holo armor?
can't wait to get a holo-penis extension
for my holo girlfriend
:suicide:
This, is patent able, Apple, take notes.
Hmm seems like a downgrade forom the advancement of fully animated floating hologramds that was made a few months ago

DON'T GIVE THEM IDEAS NO PLEASE NO
How long until functioning Holorifles?

It's an original idea, so they have the right to protect it, what the patent was made to do.

I think he was more worried about Apple trying to patent light.
This tech seems interesting, but it's still quite a while away from the free-floating holograms of sci-fi lore. Then again the interactivity's pretty neat.
