In reference to the Harper’s Bazaar photo shoot, she replied to a question from co-host Regis Philbin by saying “Yes, I play dress up! I do it for a living, like a retard!”
The audience laughed at the remark and there was no comment from the hosts of the show Live with Regis and Kelly.
But a spokesman for the Special Olympics said: “It is always disappointing when the R-word is used, especially by someone who is influential to society.
“The pervasive use of the R-word, even in an off-the-cuff self-deprecating manner, dehumanises people with intellectual disabilities and perpetuates painful stereotypes that are a great source of suffering and negative stigma.”
Peter Berns, chief executive of The Arc, a non-profit group supporting those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, said the use of the word was “extraordinarily offensive and inappropriate”.
Speaking to Us Magazine, he said: “Frankly, someone in her position ought to know better.
“She is using language that is offensive to a large segment of the population in this country.
“Every time folks hear that word, it kind of reminds them of all the discrimination and oppression they’ve experienced in their lives.”
Aniston, 41, was promoting her film The Switch, a romantic comedy about a woman having artificial insemination.
Aniston was criticised earlier this week following comments about marriage. Bill O’Reilly, the Fox News host, said the actress was “destructive to our society” after she discussed she said: “Women are realising it more and more knowing that they don’t have to settle with a man just to have that child.”
In Aniston's latest film, she plays a single woman who uses a sperm donor to get pregnant.
