pretty awful
Anything that you found specifically awful about it?
there was no central theme or flow. felt like someone just stuck a bunch of garage band loops together
there was no central theme or flow. felt like someone just stuck a bunch of garage band loops together
But do you have anything to comment that speaks to the instrumental elements of the song or the overall production?
well that's exactly it there is no continuity in the "instrumental" aspect of the song in that it seems to just be all over the place musically and there are no reoccurring themes. the production just seems flat
Your masters are seriously really overcompressed. What do you do when you mix anyway?
In the first half of the song there's just so many different melodies and synths one after another... sounds like a demo song for a synth or something. The drums were much too quiet.
Weird, but in a bad way.
I love it

I usually use a soundgoodizer and then I go back and add a fruity parametric eq 2 and mess with it on the spots that need work.
I liked the second half. To be honest, most of the 1st half kinda made me cringe.

It was intended to be more of an experimental house track. I wasn't going for a very typical "housy" sound but more of an experimental track with some house-like elements.
Meh. There's no real flow I can't really tap my foot to it and get into the flow of the music. It's sort of just sounds like a bunch of synths floating around. The first part is also a tad on the treble side.

Don't use soundgoodizer, learn how compressors work.

Experimental is not an excuse for bad

I mean, anyone can throw together a bunch of stuff and call it art, even if it is shit. Just look at abstract art

Ack. Better not to start that argument
Ack. Better not to start that argument
tru dat.
I'm not saying there shouldn't be experimental, I'm saying you should keep your experiments to yourself and make proper stuff for other people

Proper stuff? Last time I checked "normal" was just a setting on my washing machine.

Why not? Experimental music doesn't always have to sound horrible.
Why not? Experimental music doesn't always have to sound horrible.
Well my point was that you shouldn't post horrible stuff on the internet then.
[editline]5th August 2011[/editline]
And ym real real point was that stop using soundgoodizer

The problem with that is that I will never be able to develop some kind of generalized standard for what is "good." Your "good" might be different than the next guys.

There still is a general opinion on what's good an what's not good.
I mean you can tell if something is really horrible.

fyi your song is not horrible

When i was starting out I had that exact same thought. It's not true, there's a reason people get signed other than they got lucky. Mixing is very technical, EQ, compression, reverb. It's not a question of art.
And yeah, your song doesn't suck, it has some okay parts, but it's overcompressed and it sounds like you tried to mash too much stuff into one track. Structure and such is quite important

Explain Odd Nosdam.
below average song, learn mastering techniques

What do I explain about him?
What do I explain about him?
His music is experimental and in most people's minds it comes across as "bad" music. Solely because he uses a lot of sounds which deviate from the norm, and composes his songs in a very odd (no pun intended) arrangement.

this is good experimental, it stretches the boundaries of music and flows incredibly well, everything even though it is abnormal, there is still a feel that it is meant to be there. placing things all over the place for the sake of being experimental is a hopeless pursuit.
I agree, Amon Tobin does some great stuff. This is the gray area i'm talking about:
