China's state press and publishing body said such words were sullying the purity of the Chinese language. It said standardised Chinese should be the norm: the press should avoid foreign abbreviations and acronyms, as well as "Chinglish" - which is a mix of English and Chinese. The order also extends existing warnings that applied to radio and TV. China's General Administration of Press and Publication said that with economic and social development, foreign languages were increasingly being used in all types of publications in China. It said such use had "seriously damaged" the purity of the Chinese language and resulted in "adverse social impacts" on the cultural environment, reported the People's Daily newspaper. If words must be written in a foreign language, an explanation in Chinese is required, the state body said. [/release]
Oh China, you so communist.
We should introduce something like this in Germany. More and more German words are replaced by English ones and some of them are just ridiculous. I mean "Handy" is the German word for cell phone now and a "body bag" is a neck pouch...

Even studying the German language briefly in school (that normally teaches a more traditional style) makes you realize how extremely bastardized it is by English. Just out of curiosity for someone learning; What is the real German word for cellular phone?
Languages evolve. That's just what happens.
But it sucks. Especially if you hear English words pronounced by my grandparents. ("Mänätscher") [editline]21st December 2010[/editline]
What is the real German word for cellular phone?
Mobiltelefon, but no one uses it.
Oh China, you so communist.
More like Oh China, you so totalitarian
Oh China, you so communist.
What does this have to do with communism? A fascist state could easily do this too. You are an idiot.

We should write a letter to them. In English.
Eventually everyone will speak a single language, it's inevitable in a world were social communications and networks are evolving fast.
Languages evolve. That's just what happens.
English is not the right direction, however.
English is not the right direction, however.
It kinda is, it's an easy to learn language and it's pretty much everywhere.
I'm fairly sure France has similar programs in effect, it's a very common government reaction to globalization.
English is not the right direction, however.
never mind the fact that most of the civilized world speaks it and it's extremely easy to learn if you already speak a romance language
For once china, you have surprised me.
easy to learn language
Not really. There's no real consistency tense-wise.
In 100 years: 80% of the world speaks English, the other 20% speaks Chinese.
Not really. There's no real consistency tense-wise.
oh my god there are exceptions to the rules how will I ever learn it now
never mind the fact that most of the civilized world speaks it and it's extremely easy to learn if you already speak a romance language
Majority vote eh? I'm afraid the Chinese are numerous.
it's an easy to learn language
... no it's not. Everyone learns it because they have to. It's such a mash up of various languages and it has so few rules that are actually consistent.
oh my god there are exceptions to the rules how will I ever learn it now
No - there are no rules in English.
... no it's not. Everyone learns it because they have to. It's such a mash up of various languages and it has so few rules that are actually consistent.
You have a better alternative?
You have a better alternative?
Panglish. :science: Edit: I'm kidding.
There was this language that was supposedly going to be a second language everyone would learn but it pretty much went to shit, can't remember the name.
