Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth began the filibuster at 11:18 a.m. CDT Tuesday. To derail a vote in the GOP-dominated Senate, she must keep speaking on the bill until midnight — the deadline for the end of the 30-day special session. Before Davis began speaking, her chair was removed. CBSDFW.com reports that Davis must speak continuously -- and stay on topic -- the entire time. She is not allowed to lean against something for support. And she will not be able to stop or take a break, not even for meals or the restroom, during the entire 13-hour ordeal.
When combined in a state 773 miles wide and 790 miles long and with 26 million people, the measures would close almost every abortion clinic in Texas. A woman living along the Mexico border or in West Texas would have to drive hundreds of miles to obtain an abortion if the law passes.
Since we have a related thread about the bill passing the Texas House vote, some things ought to be clarified here:
While its generally a good idea to get an abortion as soon as possible and usually no later than 20 weeks, outright banning abortions past that point even for medical emergencies is a terrible idea.
And, if you're not convinced that the people behind this bill have no clue about reproductive issues, here's a video of the bill's sponsor during the debate:

Just so we're clear on what's important from that, Rep. Jodie Laubenberg thinks forensic rape kits can be used to perform dilation an curettage, and that plan b/levonorgestrel cause abortions.
Neither of these "facts" are medically sound. She's either incompetent, or outright lying.
Forensic rape kits are used to gather DNA evidence, and plan b/levonorgestrel only delay ovulation. If you take plan b after you ovulate, you're S.O.L., because it doesn't inhibit fertilization at all.

Cleaned up broken links and formatting issues.
EDIT2.0:
Livestream of the filibuster:

(thanks to Steve Harvey)
EDIT3.0:
After what looked like blatant parliamentary rule breaking by the Texas GOP and a crowd filibuster, it looks like the bill has died in the Texas Senate. The Youtube livestream got well over 180k viewers and everything looks like its coming to a close.
All in all, Wendy Davis and her fellow Democratic Senators and the people of Texas have succeeded in this filibuster.
EDIT4.0:
Hold on, they just called a vote for the bill after midnight. Things are getting wonky here.
Probably Final EDIT:
Its 12:28 CDT, looks like SB5 passed with a vote after midnight. People are still talking and the crowd is still going crazy, but I can't keep up with it any more. Work starts in four hours and I haven't slept yet.
13 hour filibuster? Holy shit
I hope she pulls through.
Wait. They want to fucking ban plan b.
What the fuck.

He can start another.
I don't agree with abortions myself, but I think other people should be able to get them if they want.
Watch us get a situation like north texas 6 years ago, tattoo shops in oklahoma were banned, and so in texas we had a lot of tattoo places north near the border. People will just go to the border states for abortions.

Texas still doesnt allow gambling, shows how backwards we really are here
He can start another.
Tbh that seems like a complete abuse of power, if he can do that, whats the point of all this
Hahaha these guys are so stupid. I'm a sexual assault forensics examiner and my job is to use these kits. You go NOWHERE near the uterus, the only thing we can take from the vagina is inside the vaginal wall and around the cervix. It's just a bunch of damn cuetips retards.
Plan B saved me and my girlfriend from being parents at 15.
Who's balls to I need to fondle to keep them from being banned?

?
Texas already has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the nation. Banning Plan B and other contraceptive things will boost that. My girlfriend would be pregnant if not for Plan B - which is already fucking restricted to 18 despite age of consent being 16.
I absolutely abhor the "if it's illegal it doesn't exist" idea that Republicans have. Drugs are illegal, they're a non-issue. If we make abortion illegal it'll go away. No, you'll have back-door coat-hanger abortions and domestic violence increase severely. You're doing nothing but making it more dangerous.
And these fuckers call liberals idealistic, they're naive enough to think that illegal means impossible.

Indian reservations are the only place that casinos are allowed.

Easy there cowboy, most republicans I know support unbanning drugs, likely for libertarian/money saving purposes though. The drugs debate isn't republican vs. democrat.

Anyone who thinks this has obviously never had sexual intercourse. Stop telling people what they should and shouldn't do with their bodies.

most republicans you know isn't a useful metric, hth

The drugs debate, as far as I've seen, is basically Republicans vs. anyone with a shred of sense in their head, as are several debates in Washington. Abortion is no different; so are most religious, sexual, and gender-related issues. I don't mean to call the whole party stupid (nay, merely the majority of those in the limelight), but their fuck up-to-reasonable argument ratio is vastly unbalanced compared to the Democrats.
I'm watching the stream, and this dude (Senator Estes?) is really going to try and pull a technicality by using the word "paper" instead of "a computer"? Now he's saying the rules are too flexible? Absolutely absurd, what an asshole.
[editline]25th June 2013[/editline]
Now some other guy is trying to argue the same thing with semantics, at least she gets a break from having to speak.
Holy shit my city is sort of in the news for something that isn't terrible. (She's the senator for Fort Worth's district.)

Her 2nd strike was because someone assisted her in putting on a back brace. There's nothing reasonable about any of it, they just want her off the stand so they can pass the bill.
