As I reported earlier on the ARES blog
, a new IRA splinter group has released pictures of the improvised grenade launcher used to attack a PSNI vehicle in North Belfast last week. Interestingly, the crudely welded together device appears to use a very common Makita brand cordless impact driver as some sort of trigger unit, minus the battery for photogenic purposes.

This latest development seems to be keeping in line with the Provisional IRA’s weaponizing of household items, previously culminating in the explosive baked-bean tin launching, digestive biscuit slinging ‘PRIG’ launcher.

This would-be killer holds a homemade rocket launcher before he fires it at a police Land Rover in a brazen bid to kill.
A group calling itself the IRA claimed it was behind the attack on police officers in Ardoyne in North Belfast on Sunday.
And they warned their “engineering departments” were improving their arsenal to attack “at a time of our choosing”.
In an added further worrying development sources say the time to make the lethal missiles could be as little as 25 minutes with the proper know-how.
The recent upsurge in the number and sophistication of the attacks is meant to send a deadly message that the paramilitary group means business.
In a statement to the Mirror the IRA chillingly vowed it is determined to continue to up the ante.
It warned: “The IRA will continue to increase its military attacks on security forces.
“Our capabilities to target Crown forces are increasing and developing and as a result we will continue to target them at a time of our choosing.”
Senior PSNI officers admitted the device “pierced” the outer skin of the targeted vehicle but didn’t penetrate the armour, therefore saving the lives of those inside.
The would-be IRA assassin is thought to have emerged from Brompton Park with the handheld missile before firing it. But republican sources insisted the Semtex-filled rocket was fired from a closer range than 60ft.
A republican source claimed: “It did strike the vehicle and it was closer than 60ft.”
The IRA statement added: “On Sunday 18th November at approximately 11.20pm an active service unit of the IRA engaged security forces in the Ardoyne area.
“Volunteers from our Belfast brigade fired a homemade rocket launcher striking an armed PSNI military vehicle. Despite being heavily armed the PSNI fled the scene.”
As time goes on, it seems that Northern Ireland is going hot again.
Looks like a glorified spud gun...
Do they have enough spuds to spare though?
If it weren't because they are Irish I would say that that weapon is a potato launcher.
it's a 12v battery so it probably has the amperage to light a fuse or start a rocket motor if charging a bank of caps, maybe even directly.
Probably actually is potato launcher, retrofitted to fire rocket.

Tell the IRA we said bring it. Can't even into proper rebellion, bunch of losers that lot is.
Say what you will about their politics, but these guys have some ingenuity.
Why do people still call the IRA heroes?
They're terrorists, and they've been terrorists for a good long while.

American romanticism of the Irish.
Regardless of whether it's made by terrorists or not, it does look pretty cool. Humans can craft some pretty amazing things out of household materials.

Flagdog. 100% only Americans. Not like, you know, there is anyone but Americans who might live in any single closer country that could be effected by said events at all. Oh wait. Maybe Ireland should be a good place to look for that.

you're kidding yourself if you're trying to pretend that shitloads of the funds and weapons the IRA has received over the years weren't from 'irish' americans
Yo that's an expensive fucking drill

no it isn't
Man, why the fuck is the IRA still a thing? What is it even hoping to accomplish? The Irish are treated just as well as anyone else, and the country has its independence.
They're still a lot of tensions in the North that arent just going to disappear because someone signed an agreemeent

Pretty much this, not to worry though these guys are pretty much street Spides playing soldier, not really a "a IRA splinter group" If anything the "real" guys will probably pay them a visit and tell them to quiet down, probably with a hurl to the kneecaps especially after going to the press and saying "were IRA lol were going to continue attacking the RUC with hardware appliances".
Also fucking hell guys the potato jokes are getting old now, its pretty much a water melon and fried chicken thing at this stage, stop.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, I guess. Its the same with all conflicts ever across the world.

But they don't have the entire country, as far as they see it half of their country is occupied by the British.
These people are still around? Why haven't we killed them all yet?
Call of Duty just found their newest weapons.
We already have a medal of honor for Al-Quada, IRA Medal of Honor when?
These guys aren't really the IRA...
The provisional IRA disbanded. As others said, these are just a glorified street gang. Like hoods. It exists on both sides, you get assholes running around acting like they're in the UVF.
American romanticism of the Irish.
... what
Nobody in the US likes the IRA because they're Irish, what the fuck, you're lucky to even find an American who's aware of any of that outside of actual Irish Americans and people near Irish communities. Maybe Irish Americans might be "yaaay IRA!" because they're Irish and yeah, whatever, but the rest of us simply give zero fucks.
Also fucking hell guys the potato jokes are getting old now, its pretty much a water melon and fried chicken thing at this stage, stop.
If we do that then there's nothing left except your crippling alcoholism, which is sad and not funny at all. :(

Oh no, trust me, a lot of the Irish Americans were 2nd or 3rd generation.
But yes. Americans funded the shit out of the IRA, while they bought plenty of Czech semtex*.
*(Black market, ofc)
It looks like a gun made out of hotdogs, sausages, and hamburger.
American romanticism of the Irish.
Uhhhh, no, try Irish hatred of the British. To some people over here anything that's against Britain or the English specifically is automatically good.

Wow, I guess they are American supplied then
I like the look of homemade weapons.
guys... cmon, we've got enough terrorist groups to deal with
also the mechanisms for fighting terrorist groups have gotten much much more efficient in the last 25 years

I'm Scottish, you git. I had family killed and nearly killed in North Ireland during the Troubles.
They can kindly fuck off. Northern Ireland's on the road to recovery, we don't need these wannabes causing trouble.

Its as if people always weigh in on American issues, but Americans cant weigh in on theirs!
